Malky Mackay lands top Hibs job as Easter Road club pounce for new sporting director

Malky Mackay has been appointed as Hibs' new sporting director.

After conducting their full club review, the Easter Road club have acted quickly to bring in someone to oversee the footballing department and will now be looking to appoint a head coach following the sacking of Nick Montgomery yesterday. Mackay was sacked as Ross County manager in November.

He previously worked as a performance director for the SFA and has also bossed Watford, Cardiff and Wigan. He was blocked from taking the Crystal Palace job when Cardiff sent a dossier alleging misconduct with Mackay later apologising for sending messages disrespecting other cultures.

Hibs announced the appointment this evening and hope his experience will stand him in good stead for the role. And they have confirmed he will "lead" on the recruitment of a new boss.

The Gordon Family commented: “We’d like to welcome Malky and believe he will be a huge asset to our Club and the football department. As the Board conducted the football review, it became clear to everyone that not only did we need someone with experience of the Scottish game, but also a person who could help drive us forward both strategically and operationally.

“Early in the recruitment process Malky discussed his strategic vision for Hibs and the necessary framework to deliver success. Everyone at the Club looks forward to working with him.”
