Pep Guardiola rages at referee as Man City’s season turns into bad dream
Once more on to the pitch for Pep Guardiola at full-time to remonstrate anew with the referee and his assistants, raging against whatever the injustice is this time – although also cognisant that the big picture is getting bleaker for the reigning champions.
Whatever corner that might potentially have been turned against Nottingham Forest in midweek, this was another step back for City. Guardiola was surely seeking a discussion with referee Rob Jones over the dismissal of Rico Lewis for a second yellow card, a decision that might have gone either way, but City did not drop two more points because of that sending-off.
They were not dominant enough for the course of this game, behind within four minutes and after that playing many of the old tunes to less effect than in the past. Guardiola suggested that playing the last few minutes with 10 men was decisive but eventually it was the question of injuries to which he returned. He does not feel that he has the right players yet with the right level of fitness to compete.
City are now eight points off leaders Liverpool, who still have to play that postponed game in hand at Goodison Park. Indeed, City are just as close to mid-table and their neighbours Manchester United, who visit the Etihad next Sunday.
The games are relentless: Juventus in Turin on Wednesday, the Manchester derby, Villa away the following Saturday. City continue to look vulnerable. Guardiola is starting to talk that way too, about a season he believed was ill-starred from the very beginning and is turning into the bad dream that he always envisaged. That was even before he concluded his post-match press conference and was told that the team’s private-jet flight back to Manchester from Biggin Hill Airport had been cancelled.
They conceded their second goal directly from a corner, headed in firmly by Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix. Oliver Glasner later pointed out that set-pieces were clearly a part of the game that his side could exploit. The Palace manager noted the absence of Rodri, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Aké – all of whom might have got a head on that crucial corner.
It is tempting to look at City’s season in terms of the problems Guardiola recites as a matter of course – the injuries that have denied him so many of his defenders and also played havoc with his attacking options. But there is something else greater than that, which developed at Selhurst Park against a committed, well-organised opposition. The big figures in the City team are getting older and the feats of great technique and match-winning dominance are getting that much harder.
Erling Haaland scored his first goal in three games, but he was also denied another by the glove of Dean Henderson just two minutes after Palace’s first. A fine Kevin De Bruyne through-ball just needed to be buried to change the course of the game, and it would be more than 20 minutes until Haaland would equalise for City.
If City were saving their best for a late crescendo of pressure then it was only partly undermined by Lewis’s red card on 84 minutes. The 20-year-old academy graduate had picked up his first for dissent and when he threw himself at Trevoh Chalobah’s clearance, Lewis’s foot that ended up under the Palace man’s boot. Yet the nature of the challenge from Lewis, and perhaps its recklessness, convinced referee Jones that a second yellow was necessary.
The game looked right from the usual perspective of City – more possession, more passes – but they never seemed dominant. Palace broke quickly whenever they could through Ismaila Sarr, their best attacker, as well as Eberechi Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta, and that was enough. Midfielder Will Hughes was excellent, with his vision part of what made Palace so dangerous when they seized possession – and it was Hughes who played in Daniel Muñoz for the first goal.
Haaland headed the second when both Marc Guéhi and Henderson appeared to lose the great Norwegian in their peripheral vision – both of them drawn to him and then decisively second-best in reaching the cross from Matheus Nunes. The second Palace goal will have been crushing for Guardiola. A Hughes corner and a big header from Lacroix.
There was a question over whether the ball had been stilled for the free-kick that began the sequence for City’s second – a classic of the Guardiola era. A passing sequence that ended with a ball prodded by Bernardo Silva through the inside-left channel and finished by Lewis. There was another chance for Savinho who remarkably still does not have a goal for City since joining in the summer.
Henderson was equal to that one and in the closing stages City were obliged to defend a couple of corners where they might have been embarrassed. Glasner did not look entirely happy with a point. “If we had performed to our best level we would have won it,” he said. No doubt Guardiola felt much the same but that level is currently not within City’s grasp.

Glasner: ‘An unbeaten week – everything is fine’
Oliver Glasner said Crystal Palace’s 2-2 draw with champions Manchester City will give side confidence going forward. Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, Glasner said: “We are pleased with the point and many parts of the performance. It feels like if we’d performed at our best level we could have won the game.
“An unbeaten week with draws against Newcastle and Manchester City, everything is fine. We want to improve and get better in some situations and we could win those games.”

Frank: ‘I am very proud of my players’
Thomas Frank has expressed how “proud” he was of Brentford’s “great performance” at home to Newcastle. Speaking to Match of the Day after the game, Frank said: “Very happy, it was a great performance in many ways. The way we performed today physically and with quality against a very good Newcastle side, I am very proud of my players.
“We started well last season for 11 or 12 games, then injuries hit us hard. So we have tried to add layers, be more controlled and make more breakthroughs, playing more forward. We have showed we have a lot of good offensive players.
“I would like to carry on this home form – some wins on the road would be welcome too.”

Emery: ‘We have to thank our fans’
Unai Emery was full of praise for the Aston Villa fans who braved the “difficult weather” as his side held on for a 1-0 win against Southampton. Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the Spaniard said: “We have to thank our fans because it was difficult in the weather today. They [Southampton] started the game well, first 20-25 minutes they had chances. Progressively in the second half we stopped them better.
“We were close to a second goal [after Jhon Duran put Villa ahead] and until the last moment we were defending, trying to keep possession and trying to score another goal. At the end we deserved to win and a clean sheet too.”

Howe: ‘Uncharacteristic from us. Poor defensively’
Eddie Howe pointed to Newcastle’s poor defending as the main contributing factor in their 4-2 defeat against Brentford.
Speaking to the club’s official media channel after the match, Howe said: “We didn’t defend well enough, it’s as simple as that, really. The goals we conceded, we look back on and we cringe a little bit. Uncharacteristic from us. Poor defensively. I could go through all the goals and highlight not just one mistake, but three or four mistakes in every goal.”

Guardiola: ‘We gave everything and we take a point’
Pep Guardiola has insisted he is “proud” of his Manchester City team following their 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace. Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the manager said: “Really good. So proud of the team. I liked everything of the team, how we fought. We have a lot of problems with our squad.
“We fought incredible. We came back twice. It’s a difficult place to come. We struggled in the beginning. We gave everything and we take a point.
“Long balls, second balls, they’re stronger than us. We started the second half a bit sloppy. After 2-1 we reacted well.
“We lost another player defensively for the next game for a second yellow card.”

Giant test for City
Palace’s second goal, a header from a corner which is as bad as it gets for managers – who at least expect to be able to defend simple set-pieces. The home team have been fantastic on the counterattack. This is now a giant test for City. It is not like they are doing any one thing badly – they just are not doing anything really well.

City look vulnerable on the counterattack
City have not played badly, although they undoubtedly look more vulnerable on the counterattack. Hard to say why other than that so many of the players upon which they rely – Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Kyle Walker, Ilkay Gundogan are a year older than last year. They are hard to replace and they will still win many games – they may well win this one – but whether they will win enough is another question.

Haaland levels for City at Selhurst Park
City fans respond to Erling Haaland’s equaliser with the song: ‘City’s staying up’. Haaland made it look simple. Not a great moment for Dean Henderson either who came for the cross and did not get it.

Southampton fall apart
Southampton have fallen apart again. When will they learn? Joe Lumley almost gifts them a goal trying to play out from the back but made a save to rescue his team. But Villa run through them with their very next move. Simple long ball down the middle should have been dealt with by Taylor Harwood-Bellis but Jhon Duran pinched it and ran through before finishing.

The wind is whistling into the stadium – it can be clearly heard. Youri Tielemans had to re-spot a corner when the ball was blown, then a Southampton clearance was blown back onto the pitch after looking destined for Row Z. 3pm preview
With the Merseyside derby postponed due to Storm Darragh, we do have games to look forward to in the Midlands where Aston Villa host Southampton and two in London, with Brentford welcoming Newcastle United and Crystal Palace facing Manchester City.
Villa, who beat Brentford 3-1 in midweek, look set to be without midfielder Amadou Onana for a fifth successive game. Southampton have Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Flynn Downes and Tyler Dibling all available again after suspension but will be without captain Jack Stephens after his red card against Chelsea last time out.
Newcastle full-back Kieran Trippier missed the thrilling 3-3 draw with Liverpool due to illness and could miss the trip to Brentford. Thomas Frank on the other hand is hopeful midfielder Christian Norgaard will be available after sitting out the trip to Villa.
Captain Marc Guehi says Palace will go into the City game with confidence after their 1-0 win away at Ipswich. Pep Guardiola’s side who have been hampered by injuries all season, will likely be without forward Phil Foden due to illness and defender Nathan Ake who had to be substituted late on in City’s 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.
