Manchester City have announced that defender Josh Wilson-Esbrand has joined Championship side Stoke City on loan for the remainder of the season, as their squad revamp continues.

City have already confirmed the £33.5m capture of Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov, as well as the £29.5 million signing of Palmeiras' Vitor Reis. They are also closing in on the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush, who is expected to complete a £60million-plus move imminently.

It has been reported that City's transfer budget this window could be as much as £250million, with their plan of a summer of spending bought forward due to the poor form earlier in the season.

The incomings mean that there are also expected to be outgoings, including some of the squad's younger players. After numerous loan spells over the last few season, Wilson-Esbrand spent the first half of the current season with City, but failed to make a first-team appearance.

The 22-year-old will now aim to help Stoke climb up the Championship table - with the team currently sitting in eighth position. His move sees him reunited with manager Mark Robins, with the two working together during a six-month loan spell at Coventry City back in January 2023.

Speaking following the deal, Stoke sporting director Jonathan Walters outlined the reason for targeting the City man. "Josh brings all the physical attributes needed to be a real asset at both ends of the pitch," he told the club's official website.

"As a left-footed player who can cover multiple roles, he adds balance, versatility and quality to our squad. With Championship experience and having previously been part of a successful team under Mark, Josh is already well-prepared to make a significant impact in a Stoke City shirt."
