Pep Guardiola has told Kyle Walker that Manchester City will demand a fair price for their "top class" defender in the January window.

The Blues have been looking to add to their squad after agreeing a £33.5m deal for Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov and opening talks over defender Vitor Reis and forward Omar Marmoush. Guardiola said that City did not want to lose anybody in the January window, yet Walker has asked to be able to leave after a difficult campaign on and off the pitch.

City do not want to keep unhappy players who would rather be somewhere else, although at the same time they only allow them to leave if buying clubs offer a fair price. There have been a number of examples where that has not been the case, including Ederson last summer and Walker himself two years ago when Bayern Munich were keen.

Guardiola talked up Walker's qualities after revealing he wanted to leave, suggesting City have a player who can still have four more years at the top of his game if he can find his focus. With a contract that still has 18 months to run, the Blues will only allow Walker to leave this month if they get an offer that reflects that value.

"I said to him now it's a question of the market," said Guardiola. "He is an incredible player with his incredible physicality, when he is focused he is unstoppable as a right-back.

"He's a top class player, if he is fit he can play one, two, three, four more years as a professional. I never see a player with these physical conditions in my career, and of course I never, never, never have a desire for one player, but he has to have agreement with the club and I'm sorry, I was never involved with all the players.
