Man City v Newcastle LIVE: Result as Erling Haaland injury blots win after Omar Marmoush hat-trick
Omar Marmoush scored a sensational first-half hat-trick to sink Newcastle United as the Egyptian announced himself at Manchester City.
Substitute James McAtee added a late fourth as City made light work of their visitors, although the day was not perfect for Pep Guardiola as Erling Haaland limped off near the end with what appeared to be a right knee injury, just four days before City’s Champions League play-off second leg in Madrid.
The result propelled City to fourth in the table and saw Newcastle slip back to seventh.

Guardiola gives Haaland update
17:43 , Lawrence Ostlere
Guardiola appeared confident when asked about the injury. “When he was down, everyone was scared but he got up and walked smiling like always,” the manager said. “I didn’t speak to him or the doctors but the doctors didn’t come with bad news so hopefully he is fine.”
Match summary
17:17 , Opta
Marmoush’s first Premier League goal after 19 minutes - assisted by Ederson - was ultimately enough to settle the tie between Manchester City and Newcastle United at the Etihad, but the Egypt international would go on to make a real impression, netting twice more in the ensuing 14 minutes to register an impressive hat-trick, before a late McAtee strike following a corner gave Guardiola’s team a 3-0 win at full-time. The Magpies looked solid and organised in the opening quarter-hour but were decidedly second-best from the moment the first goal went in, and were unable to muster any kind of response at the other end of the pitch. Second-half substitutions looked to improve the visitors somewhat, with Miley registering Newcastle’s first and only shot on target 15 minutes after being introduced, but it was nowhere near enough to make it a nervy final frame for the hosts. City found the back of the net three times with an xG of 1.89, which puts them in good stead ahead of games against Real Madrid in the Champions League and Liverpool in the Premier League next Sunday, dependant on the news of Haaland’s health following a non-contact knee injury sustained late in the match, while Newcastle United will be looking to respond in their next match against Nottingham Forest in eight days, after a poor showing with an expected goals of just 0.39.
Full-time: Man City 4-0 Newcastle
16:58 , Richard Jolly at Etihad Stadium
A terrific afternoon for City, with the only concern coming when Haaland went down and hobbled off, though it didn't look anything overly serious. Besides suggesting Marmoush could be a terrific signing, this could go a long way towards securing a top-four finish. Newcastle were rivals for one but they were battered. With Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest dropping points, City could also enjoy events elsewhere.
Full-time: Man City 4-0 Newcastle
16:54 , Lawrence Ostlere
A near-perfect day for City was blotted by Erling Haaland’s late injury. But it was a day to remember for Omar Marmoush, scoring a first-half hat-trick to push City’s case for a top-five finish in the Premier League and dent Newcastle’s challenge.

Gundogan’s inswinging corner finds Haaland, who outmuscles Newcastle defenders to flick on for James McAtee to knock home from close range. A rough day for Newcastle.
Man City 3-0 Newcastle
16:39 , Lawrence Ostlere
78 min: City fans will be delighted to see Doku back in action, for the first time in a month, especially given the injury to Grealish. He could bring some firepower off the bench in Madrid if and when it’s needed.
Guardiola turns attention to Madrid
16:35 , Richard Jolly at the Etihad Stadium
Pep Guardiola’s thoughts could now turn to Real Madrid so his substitutions may reveal some of his thinking. Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake, not playing today, are likely to come back into contention and the probability now is that Marmoush, a substitute for the first leg, will start in the Bernabeu. He has come off, along with Phil Foden, which could be a sign the Englishman is also likely to begin the game in Spain.

70 min: Anthony Gordon is replaced by Callum Wilson, while Jeremy Doku comes on for the hat-trick hero Omar Marmoush. The Etihad stands to applaud – could that earn Marmoush a start against Madrid at the Bernabeau?

66 min: On Radio 5 Live, Chris Sutton muses that Nico Gonzalez hasn’t done much at all today in City’s midfield. He’s then told that Gonzalez has had more touches of the ball than any other player.
Man City 3-0 Newcastle
16:25 , Lawrence Ostlere
63 min: City are taking their time over throw-ins and free-kicks as they try to take any last sting out of the game. They have given up a few leads this season so no one at the Etihad is entirely comfortable yet...
Day to forget for Trippier
16:21 , Richard Jolly at Etihad Stadium
This match may have been decided by Marmoush with a quarter of an hour of brilliance. Newcastle put up too little resistance and, in their search for a response, Eddie Howe hauled off Kieran Trippier - who was at fault for the opener - and Joe Willock at the break. Trippier was terrific against Arsenal nine days ago but his immediate opponent had a hat-trick before half-time here. That doesn't reflect well on him.

This is extraordinary. Savinho dribbles at Lewis Hall down City’s right side and pulls it back to Marmoush, who fires home his third from the penalty spot. First-half hat-trick!

Two goals from Omar Marmoush have City cruising at the Etihad Stadium:
Marmoush arrives at the Etihad
15:32 , Richard Jolly at Etihad Stadium
A superb seven minutes for Omar Marmoush and Manchester City. The £59m man didn't score in his first four appearances. His City account has been opened emphatically and impressively in the fifth. His lobbed opener was terrific. It also gave Ederson a third assist of the season in the Premier League. Which, to put it another way, is one more than Phil Foden has.
Man City 2-0 Newcastle

26 min: Savinho drives towards the box, jinking inside before playing a one-two with Foden and shooting for the far corner, but Dubravka gets down to make the save. City are all over Newcastle right now.

Another! Marmoush takes the ball from Gundogan on the left side of the box and then drags it on to his right foot before firing a low finish past Dubravka. It’s a really well-taken goal.
Man City 1-0 Newcastle
15:24 , Lawrence Ostlere
21 min: Khusanov is showing a few signs of nerves, perhaps, and requires Stones to bail him out after a mistake which Guardiola very deliberately and publicly applauds.

...But it doesn’t last long!
A long ball from Ederson clears Newcastle’s back line – Trippier badly mistimes his header – and Omar Marmoush is in on goal. He steadies himself before lobbing the stranded Dubravka with a bouncing ball. A smart finish, and that’s Marmoush’s first goal for City.
Man City 0-0 Newcastle
15:19 , Lawrence Ostlere
15 min: Marmoush smashes over the bar from just inside the box. Newcastle are limiting to City to very little, thus far.
Gonzalez filling Rodri role
15:18 , Richard Jolly at Etihad Stadium
No alarms for Khusanov so far, this is very different from the Chelsea game for him. There has also been a decent start by Gonzalez: a first - and obvious - impression is that he has the height and athleticism City have lacked in central midfield since Rodri was injured. He looks like a defensive midfielder: time will tell how good a one he is. But Ilkay Gundogan is probably relieved he has a more physical presence alongside him.
Man City 0-0 Newcastle
15:15 , Lawrence Ostlere
8 min: Savinho drives down the wing and cross towards the six-yard box, where Hall gets rid. Little of note in this opening exchanges.
Man City 0-0 Newcastle
15:09 , Lawrence Ostlere
3 min: City are probing early, with lots of the ball, but no sights of goal as yet. Guardiola is already animatedly redirecting his players who are not quite carrying out his instructions.

We’re underway. Newcastle are in their away strip – the maroon and navy horizontal stripes.

The players are out on the pitch at the Etihad Stadium... here we go! This should be a good game.
Haaland captains City for first time
14:52 , Richard Jolly at the Etihad Stadium
Some interesting team news as Erling Haaland captains City for the first time. There is added intrigue as the team includes Ilkay Gundogan, one of the five captains in the squad - the others are Kevin de Bruyne, Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva and Rodri - but the Treble-winning skipper doesn't get the armband today. There are plenty of changes for City, with injuries one reason and the second leg against Real Madrid another. Nico Gonzalez gets his first Premier League start, Abdukodir Khusanov his second. He will hope it goes better than the first.
The race for top four
14:45 , Chris Wilson
As mentioned before, the club that finishes in fifth is likely to get a place in the Champions League next season, easing some of the competition for places at the top.
But as it stands there are arguably six sides fighting for third, fourth and fifth, with Nottingham Forest sitting in third, four points above Chelsea currently.
Today’s game sees fifth-paced City face sixth-placed Newcastle, with both teams on the same points.
And it’s a high-flying Bournemouth side who are one point and one place below the Magpies, with Aston Villa three points further behind in eighth.
This is how the table looks currently:
3rd – Nottingham Forest, 47 points
4th – Chelsea, 43 points
5th – Manchester City, 41 points
6th – Newcastle, 41 points
7th – Bournemouth, 40 points
8th – Aston Villa, 37 points

The Man City trend behind latest Champions League collapse
14:30 , Chris Wilson
The serial Champions League-winning manager sat in the media theatre at the Etihad Stadium and saluted his defence.
“I didn’t think the team were able to make such a sacrifice as they did this evening,” he said.
It wasn’t Pep Guardiola, though he fielded five men who were bought as centre-backs, who cost a combined £240m, four of whom began as the back four in a Champions League final when their side kept a clean sheet.
For City, it was the script of their season, shown to a wider audience. There is a broader narrative: that many do not realise how vulnerable this City are until they witness it. Even on an evening when, in terms of ambition and attacking threat, they delivered one of the best performances of their campaign, there came an end to sum it up.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe makes Alexander Isak claim ahead of Erling Haaland showdown
14:10 , Chris Wilson
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has signalled his intention to keep hold of coveted striker Alexander Isak as he prepares to go into Premier Leaguebattle with Erling Haaland.
The 25-year-old Sweden international, the Magpies’ record £63m signing, has 19 goals this season and has been linked with a move away from St James’ Park, with Arsenal and Barcelona reportedly monitoring his situation.
His presence on the same pitch as Manchester City star Haaland, who has 27 goals this term, on Saturday will inevitably invite comparisons, but may also highlight Newcastle’s need to keep their most potent weapon.

Will the Premier League get an extra Champions League spot next season?
13:25 , Chris Wilson
With both sides in the race for Europe, here’s a brief explanation on the race for the top five.
The race for the top four in the Premier League is often one of the most intriguing parts of the season as teams battle to qualify for the Champions League.
A place in Europe’s top club competition has long been the main reward for sides finishing second to fourth, but Champions League qualification could now include whichever team finishes in fifth in the 2024/25 season.
The Premier League is currently leading the race for one of the two ‘bonus’ spots that Uefa now award in the expanded Champions League format.

Manchester City face Newcastle United in the Premier League today, with Pep Guardiola’s side looking to immediately bounce back from a bruising defeat in midweek.
City fell to a dramatic 3-2 loss in the final minutes of their Champions League play-off first leg against Real Madrid, and though the nature of the loss will worry Guardiola, aspects of City’s performance were encouraging enough.
But they face an altogether different test today, as they come up against a Newcastle side who they are level with on both points and goal difference.
Eddie Howe’s team are in buoyant mood after reaching the Carabao Cup final earlier this month, and they are looking for a win that would take them into the top five at City’s expense.
