Man City vs Manchester United LIVE! Community Shield result, match stream and latest updates today

Man City vs Manchester United LIVE!

A horror moment for Manchester United veteran Jonny Evans gifted the Community Shield to Manchester City after a penalty shoot-out.

Evans lifted his spot-kick over the crossbar before Manuel Akanji tucked in the winning penalty as Pep Guardiola's side secured the first silverware of the season.

Alejandro Garnacho thought he had inflicted more Wembley misery on the four-time Premier League winners when he repeated his FA Cup final goalscoring heroics from just 77 days earlier with nine minutes remaining. But another substitute Bernardo Silva, headed a last-minute equaliser for City to make it 1-1 and take the match to spot-kicks.

Andre Onana saved from Silva early in the shoot-out but Jadon Sancho, back for Man Utd following his bust-up with Erik Ten Hag, saw his kept out by Ederson.

Evans then blazed United's eighth penalty high over the top before Akanji secured a 7-6 win for City.

Man City send stark warning to rivals despite Man Utd progress

17:40 , Marc Mayo

The question perennially on the lips of all Manchester United fans was asked at Wembley once more: ‘How will we bridge the gap between ourselves and Manchester City?’.

Alejandro Garnacho came within minutes of providing an answer, but in the end there wasn’t one.

Mason Mount 5

Struggled to make an impact, with United’s deeper midfielders and wide men seeing more of the ball than Mount.

Alejandro Garnacho (Diallo, 59’) 8

One nice run at the City defence, but he looked unsure what to do with it. Then scored what he thought would be the winning, firing into the corner with precision. Slammed home in the shootout.

Man City lift the trophy!

For the seventh time, Manchester City win the Community Shield!

Kevin De Bruyne lifts the trophy aloft from the Royal Box and ‘Blue Moon’ plays on the stereo.

A guard of honour from United to their City rivals as they head up the Wembley steps.

Manuel Akanji gives his reaction

17:18 , Marc Mayo

“I let the others shoot first, when you miss your last [penalty] you don’t go with too much confidence for the next one.

“I had confidence, I said in training I’d shoot down the middle.

“It wasn’t easy. We played well, United got better before 1-0 but we stayed in the game. A great cross by OScar and Bernardo’s header.

“I know what it’s like to miss, it has to be someone.

“It’s a great start to the season, I hadn’t won this trophy yet. I’m really happy.”

Man City 1-1 Man Utd | 90+4 mins

16:53

Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick is easily cleared and City have the ball.

Mateo Kovacic leads a charge and Kevin De Bruyne’s late cross is held by Andre Onana. Erling Haaland should have been a bit sharper onto that.

16:49

Five added minutes, who fancies a winner?

Kevin De Bruyne and Nathan Ake on for City.

A run and shot worthy of winning any cup final. It might just win United this one. Manuel Akanji dives in but it's too late.

Header from Manuel Akanji is diverted over the bar and Man City can swing in another corner.

Nothing comes of it and we have a stoppage, Josko Gvardiol took a whack to the face.

Bruno Fernandes gets in behind from a quick ball and opts to shoot early... straight at Ederson. Might have tried to lob that.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 67 mins

16:25 , Marc Mayo

A first intervention from Savinho to win Man City a corner and it’s nodded back by Ruben Dias. It has to be recycled and Savinho sees a shot blocked from Oscar Bobb’s looping cross.

Just a little bit of City pressure building now.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 64 mins

16:22 , Marc Mayo

City subs on the way. Matheus Nunes and debutant Savinho enter the fray. Nico O’Reilly and Jeremy Doku off.

Dom Smith at Wembley:

Josko Gvardiol really did seem to find his shooting boots towards the back-end of last season, and that was a fine effort which landed just wide with Andre Onana rooted.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 62 mins

16:21 , Marc Mayo

Interesting to see what those changes do to Man Utd’s shape. Marcus Rashford is looking more central in attack with Bruno Fernandes heading towards the left wing.

Facundo Pellistri has moved to right-back, allowing Lisandro Martinez to drop into the centre and Diogo Dalot goes to the left.

Jeremy Doku quickly skins the youngster but his cross is cleared and Josko Gvardiol’s hopeful hit from range goes wide.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 58 mins

16:17 , Marc Mayo

Cracking cross from Bruno Fernandes is turned out for a corner and Man Utd’s tails are up.

Harry Maguire rises well but it’s cleared and the flag is up at the return delivery.

Four changes for United. Scott McTominay, Toby Collyer, Alejandro Garnacho and Facundo Pellistri on for Amad Diallo, Mason Mount, Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 55 mins

16:14 , Marc Mayo

We had a young pitch invader swiftly removed in the cancelled celebrations of that offside goal.

Up the other end, James McAtee fires wide.

Dom Smith at Wembley:

What a huge shame that is for all the United fans at Wembley. Bruno Fernandes thought he had scored an absolute beauty, bent right into the far corner, but the flag goes up and City survive.

But a sign that United can finish after all. Now, will that insert some pace into the early stages of this second half?

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 54 mins

16:13 , Marc Mayo

GOAL DISALLOWED!

A very, very... VERY late flag chalks off Bruno Fernandes’ stunner from outside the box.

He knew he was too, after scoring he immediately looked over and even then had to wait for the flag. No doubt he was off, replays show.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 51 mins

16:09 , Marc Mayo

Chance for Nico O’Reilly to break forward but Lisandro Martinez is across in good time. James McAtee is then shut down by a solid Diogo Dalot tackle.

Good Bruno Fernandes dink over the top finds Marcus Rashford but he’s held up.

A quiet atmosphere at Wembley, let’s see who can liven it up.

Man Utd finish the half well

15:59 , Marc Mayo

Defensive issues may not be a major worry for Man Utd given the imminent additions of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, just as City’s midfield is very much in its infancy.

But this attack has looked creative despite lacking Joshua Zirkzee or Rasmus Hojlund at the focal point.

Two good chances made, one for Amad Diallo and another for Marcus Rashford, show promise but both will be annoyed to miss given the serious competition they face for their places out wide.

Dom Smith at Wembley:

Well, the scoreline wouldn't suggest it, but this has been a lively battle as we arrive at the halfway mark. Goalless, sure, but James McAtee has struck the post at one end, while Rashford has curled wide at the other.

And there was also the mix-up where Diallo squared to Mason Mount but ought to have shot. Slightly better quality in the final third is all this match needs for lift-off.

Both teams have enjoyed long periods of possession in that first half. Now to use the ball just a little better...

Watch Man Utd come close to an opener

15:54 , Marc Mayo

Slick football as Amad Diallo and Casemiro construct a neat one-two... but where was the finish?!

Man City started the brighter

15:49 , Marc Mayo

James McAtee with the best chance of the half, certainly for Man City, but he hit the woodwork after a United error.

Since the first 25 minutes of the half, City have looked second best though with their young midfield unable to fully control things. They also look a little vulnerable when United attack down the middle.

Jeremy Doku and Oscar Bobb both look bright in attack.

Half-time!

15:47 , Marc Mayo

Chances for both teams at Wembley but no shots on target as we head into the break.

Back underway without any changes for Man Utd.

Mateo Kovacic leads a City charge before Jeremy Doku flashes a shot wide of the near post. He wants a corner, doesn’t get it.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 42 mins

15:42 , Marc Mayo

Harry Maguire and Casemiro look to be struggling a little bit. The physio attends to the Brazilian while Maguire took that earlier blow colliding with Erling Haaland.

Pep Guardiola takes the chance to deliver a pre-half-time team talk. Erik ten Hag likewise.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 41 mins

15:41 , Marc Mayo

Again, Man City want to take the sting out of things with a long spell on the ball.

Rico Lewis pops up down the left channel and crosses from the byline. Blocked and cleared.

Dom Smith at Wembley:

Marcus Rashford's got to score there, really. It's by a long way the nicest attacking sequence from either side in this match. How many more chances do they need?

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 37 mins

15:37 , Marc Mayo

Another bad miss by Man Utd!

Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes again in the thick of it as Marcus Rashford is teed up on the left wing in space.

It’s trademark stuff for the forward yet he places his shot tamely wide.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 34 mins

15:35 , Marc Mayo

Bruno Fernandes punts a shot at Ruben Dias and Ederson needs a second go at claiming the high ball. That blow will need a moment to recover from, for Dias.

Dom Smith at Wembley:

United caught trying to walk it in! The defence-splitting pass from Casemiro gave Amad Diallo a chance on a tight angle, but he instead squared for Mount who couldn't catch up.

A chance that had to go in, considering the quality of the opposition Erik ten Hag's side are up against.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 32 mins

15:32 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Man City look to stick a foot on the ball to calm down that Man Utd pressure and Jeremy Doku’s pass into the box nearly finds Erling Haaland.

And then United break... a lovely move sees Casemiro find Amad Diallo in the box and he has to score!

He passes into empty space though... Mason Mount was in the region but the pass for a tap-in didn’t come off. Should have shot.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 29 mins

15:29 , Marc Mayo

A first proper chance for Man Utd, Amad Diallo does Josko Gvardiol superbly only to dribble a shot wide of the far post.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 28 mins

15:28

Nice forward ball by Bruno Fernandes on the right but it’s Casemiro picking it up on the run... and, predictably, the attack dies pretty promptly.

A lucky break for Man Utd though with a mistake from City passing it out from the back.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 24 mins

15:24

OFF THE POST!

Man Utd give it away and James McAtee clips the far post from inside the box.

Lisandro Martinez’s pass was nowhere near Jonny Evans, but he was wandering into an odd position. Poor all round from United. Fortunately, they’ll say, this is not likely to be their line-up come next weekend.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 22 mins

15:22 , Marc Mayo

Oscar Bobb cuts in and fires over from a good position!

Dom Smith at Wembley:

A well-worked City attack, with Kovacic finding Bobb nicely. He needed to show more composure, though, instead of hammering wildly over the crossbar.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 21 mins

15:21 , Marc Mayo

Another scramble in Man Utd’s box after Rico Lewis bombs forward and chips in a cross.

It pops up nearly for Andre Onana but runs on to Erling Haaland, on the stretch his shot is dealt with.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 18 mins

15:18 , Marc Mayo

Fleet of foot by Jeremy Doku to beat two men and cross from the byline... a defensive header is missed and so is the attacker’s! Nico O’Reilly the closest to it.

Brightest moment of the game so far.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 16 mins

15:16 , Marc Mayo

A laugh and a smile from Harry Maguire after he tries to knock Erling Haaland off his chase of a loose ball, which clatters both to the ground. Back underway after a short check on them.

Man Utd struggling to end this sustained spell of City possession.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 14 mins

15:14

Man City upping the ante with Oscar Bobb looking a threat. James McAtee’s cross is too deep, though.

You can tell there’s something there in Nico O’Reilly and the 19-year-old is popping up in good places. Not quite the sharpness or execution about what he does next, yet.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 10 mins

15:09 , Marc Mayo

First chance for Nico O’Reilly to make an impact and he lays off a nice ball into the box for Erling Haaland. Back to goal, he goes for a one-two but the youngster had been bumped away from the path of the pass.

City come again and Marcus Rashford tracks back to concede a corner. Oscar Bobb’s cross is headed behind for another. Some head tennis sees that one clear.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 7 mins

15:07 , Marc Mayo

A steady start by both teams. Six of the last seven Community Shield matches have featured only two goals or fewer - four of which ended 1-1.

Dom Smith at Wembley:

Patient start by United, passing it between themselves comfortably at the back. But City's press is well organised, and it's difficult for United to play through it.

Lee Carsley, newly announced as interim manager of England for September and perhaps all Autumn, is here in attendance.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 4 mins

15:05 , Marc Mayo

Big game for Mason Mount, he’s very much the manager’s player - arguably underrated despite his numbers for Chelsea over the years. Of course, his debut year at United was a disaster - wrecked by injury.

A first time for City to get on the ball here after a lovely kick out by Ederson. Rico Lewis is drifting into midfield when in possession.

Man City 0-0 Man Utd | 2 mins

15:02 , Marc Mayo

Looks like a 4-2-2-2 for Man Utd, Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes the more advanced central midfielders flanked by Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo.

Lisandro Martinez is left-back, as expected.

Erling Haaland spearheading the Man City attack, James McAtee the more advanced central midfielder leading the press.

Man City out to avoid four in a row

14:50 , Marc Mayo

Amazingly, no club has lost more Community Shield matches than Man City - and they’ve appeared in fewer than half the matches of Man Utd!

Both have suffered nine defeats in this curtain-raiser, with City losing each of the last three.

Arsenal levelled up late on before winning on penalties last year, while Liverpool were comfortable 3-1 winners in 2022. Before that, they were edged by a last-minute Leicester penalty.

Man Utd out to build on Community Shield record

14:45 , Marc Mayo

No club has won the Community Shield as often as Man Utd, who boast 21 titles having only lost this match nine times.

One of those came against Man City in 1956, the only time a Manchester derby has been played in this game.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic struck late for their last Shield in 2016 for a 2-1 win over Leicester.

Dom Smith at Wembley:

A really makeshift back-line for United, without a fit left-back. Will be interesting to see how the likes of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans cope at centre-back. Both are decent players, but do they have the pace to deal with Erling Haaland, Oscar Bobb and co?

At the other end, this needs to be a good start of a good season for Mason Mount. It is high time he slowly rebuilds his career.

Marcus Rashford backed to shine

14:40 , Marc Mayo

Erik ten Hag says Marcus Rashford is "very ambitious and motivated" to rediscover his best form with Manchester United.

Rashford has been linked with a summer move to Paris St Germain after a dramatic slump in form last season. The England winger scored just eight goals in 43 appearances in all competitions having notched 30 in 2022-23, but has impressed Ten Hag during United's pre-season tour in the United States.

The Dutchman said: "We've all seen on the tour he's very lively. He's in very good shape already and we expect a lot, as we expect from the whole team a lot this season.

"There are so many suggestions around Manchester United and around this team. So we know the truth and he's working very well, very hard, very engaged. And he's very ambitious and motivated to make it a very good season."

Rashford signed a new long-term contract last summer, keeping him at the club until 2028, but speculation mounted over his future after he was disciplined for a trip to a nightclub in Belfast in January. He also chose to take a break from social media due to rising criticism, which he described as "abuse".

When asked if he could explain Rashford's drop in form, which cost him his place in England's Euro 2024 squad, Ten Hag said: "There are so many reasons, you can list them I think. There can be part individual reasons and definitely club, team and many reasons why a player is performing or not."

Who is Nico O'Reilly?

14:35 , Marc Mayo

Nico O’Reilly is the surprise name in the Man City XI today, so are we about to witness the start of a new star’s rise?

The towering 19-year-old attacking midfielder was a regular for the City U21s in the back end of last season having joined the club’s academy aged eight.

This is his senior debut after a number of runouts in pre-season.

Also starting for City is James McAtee, 21, who has spent the last two seasons on loan at Sheffield United.

The warm-ups are underway at Wembley, which has a pretty mild atmosphere at this stage all told. This is basically a pre-season game after all.

Our reporter, Dom Smith, is in position in the press box and here he delivers his game preview. Look at for Dom’s reaction during the game plus his report and player ratings later on.

Pep Guardiola makes title prediction

14:25 , Marc Mayo

Pep Guardiola believes Manchester United have joined Arsenal as genuine Premier League title rivals to end Manchester City's reign as champions.

Mikel Arteta's side pushed City all the way in last season's title race, which went down to the final day and saw the top two separated by just two points. The Gunners have since strengthened their squad with the signing of Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori and also recorded an impressive 4-1 win over German champions Bayer Leverkusen in a recent pre-season friendly.

Asked ahead of the Community Shield against FA Cup winners United if he was concerned about his side's potential title rivals, Guardiola said: "Of course.

"I have been concerned for many years (with) how good they are because every year they are getting better.

"I see Arsenal playing at the same level as last season; I saw their game against Leverkusen. They are on fire. Every year it looks like they are more and more difficult.

"United will be back, they bought players. Everyone wants the crown we have had for four years, it's simple as that. It's how we defend it. We will see."

Erik ten Hag issues transfer update

14:20 , Marc Mayo

Erik ten Hag says Manchester United “know what we’re doing” in the transfer market.

"I don't go into details, where we are now in recruitment, what we are working on,” replied Ten Hag on Thursday.

“We know what we are doing, we are in a good position with the squad and just wait, patience and in the right moment we will tell you."

Well, it appears that deals are indeed afoot. Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s £15m sale to West Ham is reportedly agreed and fees have been agreed with Bayern Munich to sign Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui for a combined £51m plus £8.5m in add-ons.

Marcus Rashford starts up front

14:13 , Marc Mayo

A couple of interesting calls forced upon Erik ten Hag, who is without a fit senior left-back and a natural centre-forward today.

Marcus Rashford gets the nod up top, likely flanked by Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes with Mason Mount in behind - unless he goes with Fernandes as a false nine.

Lisandro Martinez is set to be left-back with Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire in the middle. Reports this afternoon say fees have been agreed to sign Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui to bolster the backline. No Aaron Wan-Bissaka, he’s off to West Ham.

Kobbie Mainoo is straight into the XI having only recently started pre-season.

Jack Grealish absent for Man City

14:11 , Marc Mayo

A late injury blow for Man City, who are without Jack Grealish due to a minor fitness issue according to reports.

Pep Guardiola brings Jeremy Doku, Ruben Dias and Manuel Akanji straight into his XI with the Belgian winger joining Erling Haaland and Oscar Bobb in attack.

Young midfielders James McAtee and Nico O’Reilly get a huge chance to impress from the start.

Kalvin Phillips on a strong bench which features Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and new signing Savinho.

Pep Guardiola bids farewell to Julian Alvarez

13:42 , Marc Mayo

Talking of absentees we perhaps didn’t expect, Julian Alvarez is off to Atletico Madrid in an £81m switch from Man City. Pep Guardiola offered his thoughts in the week.

"I want to say my gratitude to Julian," Guardiola said ahead of Saturday's Community Shield against Manchester United at Wembley. "His two years here we won everything together and his contribution has been massive, whether being part of the starting XI or not.

"He's incredibly loved by the team for his behaviour but like I said many times for many players, he wants to leave and have a new challenge.

"Atletico is a top club in Spain and Europe and when they suggested to me that he wanted to leave, imagine he stays here if he wants to leave?

"He played a lot last season and in some moments with Erling (Haaland) but I understand in some important moments he thought he was going to play.

"He said he wants a new challenge and it is what he has to do. I don't like to tell players what they have to do. Contracts are nice but they can be broken. If they are not happy, why should they be there?

"If they think happiness is around the corner, go and take a look. Both clubs are happy with the agreement, I look forward to see him back to say bye to all of us.

"It was a joy to work with him, I learnt a lot from him and hopefully he can find what he was looking for."

Leny Yoro provides positive Man Utd injury update

13:36 , Marc Mayo

One player definitely missing out when Man Utd’s line-up is named will be Leny Yoro.

The teenage defender signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford earlier this summer, with the Red Devils having beaten the likes of Real Madrid and Liverpool to his signature.

United are thought to have paid Lille around £52million up-front but the deal could rise to as high as £58m if the criteria for various add-ons are met.

Yoro impressed on his debut against Rangers in Edinburgh but suffered an injury during the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in a pre-season friendly in Los Angeles late last month.

“This is not the start I wanted, but that's football,” he wrote on social media platform X.

“The operation went well. Thank you for your many messages of support. Now, time for patience and rehabilitation work.

“See you soon, stronger.”

Kalvin Phillips could start for Man City

13:20 , Marc Mayo

Pep Guardiola has praised Kalvin Phillips and Jack Grealish for their work during pre-season.

After a torrid loan spell at West Ham, Phillips played as a centre-back on the tour of the USA could start the Community Shield in the same position. Guardiola said: "He is a central midfielder but I said many times Kalvin likes to see all the game in front of him.

"When he is in the middle surrounded by players he struggles a little bit, but he helped us a lot in the last two games on tour. I should have realised before [he can] play in that position. I think his confidence is back."

Guardiola has also been impressed by Grealish in pre-season as he bids to put the disappointment of being left out of England's Euro 2024 squad behind him.

"What I've seen so far, I love it," Guardiola said. "Every training session, his commitment and his trying. Against Barcelona he had five or six shots and was aggressive with the ball. His quality will do the rest.

"Hopefully he can sustain it until the end of the season and compete like everyone with one place for the starting XI. That depends on him."

Joshua Zirkzee ready for Man Utd debut

13:14 , Marc Mayo

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed he has the option of giving Joshua Zirkzee his debut in Saturday’s Community Shield match against Manchester City.

The Dutch striker arrived in the summer transfer window for £35.8million but only started training with his new teammates in the last week following Euro 2024.

United are, however, in need of Zirkzee at Wembley given Rasmus Hojlund’s absence with a hamstring injury.

Ten Hag has suggested that he will hand Zirkzee a runout although it remains to be seen if that is as a starter or off the bench.

“Yeah I think he can [feature],” Ten Hag told MUTV.

“He is really hungry to do this because he is looking forward and he is also very excited to be coming into the Premier League.

“To come to Manchester United and on his first occasion go to Wembley, of course that will highly motivate him, that's for sure.

“But he is also short in training, he had a break, he trained individually but he has now had a couple of days in the team training.”

More recently, City have won six of the last eight Manchester derbies and there hasn’t been a derby draw in almost four years.
