Manchester United are reportedly set to turn to the Championship to sign a competitor for Andre Onana's first choice position.

Onana has been United's No.1 since he signed in the summer of 2023 with David de Gea leaving at the expiration of his contract. While many agreed at the time that the Spaniard needed to be moved on for the good of the team, Onana has struggled with the weight of the position.

Erik ten Hag signed the Cameroonian as he represented a solid option who can play the ball out from the back with ease. However, high profile errors have negated the positivity surrounding his distribution.

It has been pondered whether United may choose to replace Onana as the club's first choice but according to The Sun, the Reds are happy to stick with the former Inter man. Instead, United are looking to sign a second choice goalkeeper who can compete with Onana for the No.1 position.

The report understands that Blackburn's Aynsley Pears is of interest to Amorim with the club's specialist scout Tony Coton having watched him in action. The 26-year-old, whose dad Stephen started his career at Old Trafford, has played all but one of Blackburn's Championship matches this season.

If United were to sign Pears in the summer, he would be joining to replace Altay Bayindir in the squad after the Turkish shot stopper has mainly been overlooked by Ruben Amorim. The Turk has missed the last seven United matches due to an unknown injury and was not named in the squad to face Arsenal this Sunday.
