Former Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has given a simple one word response to the team’s performance against Liverpool, with a message to Bruno Fernandes on social media.

Going into the game at Anfield as underdogs, United threw the form book to one side when they took on Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. Lisandro Martinez put them ahead in the second half, before they were pegged back thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah.

United weren’t done there however, as Amad drew them back level with ten minutes to play. It could have been even better for the away team with Harry Maguire having a golden chance to take all three points with seconds left to play, only to see his shot go over the bar.

The point moved United up to 13th place in the Premier League table, just one point behind Tottenham.

After the match, United captain Bruno Fernandes posted pictures from the game on his Instagram account. It prompted a response from United players old and new, including Mata.

The 36-year-old, who is currently playing in Australia, simply wrote: “Proud” along with a red heart emoji in the comments section of the post.

Also in the replies was United left-back Luke Shaw, who wrote: “You are so good” along with a red heart emoji. Former United winger Anthony Elanga, who now plays for Forest, also wrote: “What a performance!”

United will look to replicate the performance against Liverpool when they return to action in the FA Cup third round clash against Arsenal. United travel to the Emirates Stadium for their first taste of the competitions on Sunday with kick-off at 3pm.

They then return to Premier League action the following Thursday night. United host bottom-of-the-table Southampton at Old Trafford on 16 January with kick-off at 8pm.
