Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has opened up about his health scare last year and hinted that a return to football is on the cards for him in the future.

In July 2023, while holidaying in Croatia, Van der Sar suffered a brain haemorrhage and was rushed to intensive care. After a fortnight in hospital, the Dutchman began to make a recovery.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Van der Sar has opened up on exactly what happened on that fateful day. "I woke up and it was the first day of the holiday and we planned to leave that day [for a trip]," he explained.

"I started to feel something in the back of my neck, my shoulder blades. I threw up in the toilet and came back into the room, the curtains were open and I couldn’t have the light in my eyes.

"I knew I needed to call a doctor because I didn’t feel well and it turned out to be a brain hemorrhage. My wife suffered a brain haemorrhage [before] so we soon recognised the signs.

"We got in touch with the manager of the hotel in Croatia who was fantastic. We got the doctor, an ambulance and from there it was to the hospital."

Van der Sar admitted that he was unaware of the outpouring of support for him until he received his phone back from his wife two weeks after the scare. "I resigned at Ajax at the end of May, a few weeks before my episode," he continued.

"I thought I would take a year off, travel, rest, recover and then take on a new challenge. When you are working, you think that your work is the most important thing but that is not really important if your health is in danger so I am enjoying life and taking things as it comes, not really looking for a new challenge because what I did as a footballer, I played to 41, until 52 I was the director of Ajax.

"We had great success bringing the club to European pedigree again, developing players and bringing Ajax back was amazing." Van der Sar was asked finally whether tis experience meant he was done with football but the Dutchman was keen to stress that this is not potentially the case.

"No I don’t think I am finished with football. I enjoy the game and I have not been to many games but I think what I achieved, what I learnt in 11 years as a marketing director and then as a chief executive, I am sure there is going to be a challenge somewhere for me and there will be a possibility," he concluded.

"To be fair, the attraction of the football world, the smell of success or working with a team to achieve something, I think that will be a pull in a certain point in the coming years." During his playing career at United, Van der Sar won the Champions League and four Premier League titles.
