Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney showed his true colours as he sent a heartfelt message to Plymouth Argyle caretaker manager Kevin Nancekivell following their FA Cup victory over Brentford.

The Pilgrims headed to the capital as underdogs with their side rooted to the foot of the Championship table. Hosts Brentford were well fancied having enjoyed another solid season under Thomas Frank.

However, it was Plymouth who upset the odds through Morgan Whittaker as he scored in the 82nd minute to capture a spot in the FA Cup fourth round. Their reward is the chance to upset a Premier League side again when they host Liverpool at Home Park.

After the victory, Rooney took to Instagram to share a video of Nancekivell celebrating in front of the travelling supporters. The 53-year-old has taken on a number of roles at the Devon club and Saturday was his last game in charge as caretaker before Miron Muslic takes over.

Sharing his delight for Nancekivell, Rooney posted on his story (which has since expired): "So happy for this man. Legend."

The post was a measure of Rooney as a person and would not have been easy to share considering his departure from Argyle is still raw. On New Year's Eve, the Championship club sacked the former United striker after he led them to just five wins from 25 matches.

He left the club languishing in the relegation zone and with his managerial reputation currently in tatters. What would also likely sting is the fact that Rooney missed out on the chance to take on his former adversaries Liverpool in the fourth round.

It remains to be seen what Rooney does next in his career. He has managed to land a new coaching role for next month though.
