Ruben Amorim may have an unlikely solution to three Manchester United transfer problems. Following defeat to Newcastle, United have lost their last four games in all competitions and that could easily become five with a trip to Anfield for a Premier League clash against Liverpool up next.

The January transfer window swinging open could help Amorim to make some improvements in his squad, but it appears he may not be able to do that. "We don't have that possibility in January," Amorim said when asked about imminent new signings.

"You know the situation better than I [do]. It's not the case as I'm not arriving here and I can spend a lot of money, changing all the team. You know the situation, so it's not a point to talk about it."

With no funds available in the winter window, United may be forced to sanction some exits.

Victor Lindelof, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro and Marcus Rashford might all depart in 2025 with head coach Amorim already targeting the positions he would like to strengthen. Signing a new goalkeeper is one of those aims with the United boss keen to bring in some competition for Onana.

The Cameroonian endured a difficult December following a bright start to the season with it also seemingly clear that Altay Bayindir will not be getting another opportunity, after his errors against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

Although it is likely more of a summer priority, there is one solution which could be achieved in January and it can arrive with a player that Amorim is very familiar with. Former Sporting CP shot-stopper Antonio Adan is currently a free agent having departed the Portuguese club this past summer.

The 37-year-old played 156 times under Amorim and was first-choice until injury struck in February which saw him miss the final few months of their 2024/2025 campaign. Though he has been without a club for the last six months, the experienced goalkeeper has admitted he is ready for an opportunity which could be at United.

Speaking to Relevo in an interview back in November, he said: "Well, I'm fine. I always say that physically I think I'm better than ever, because I'm training more than ever.

"I'm doing specific training, personal training - and keeping myself ready for any opportunity that may arise during this time. I think the most important thing of all is to be physically well and mentally prepared for any call."
