What Man United star said immediately after Wolves defeat should set alarm bells ringing for Ruben Amorim

It only takes a second to score a goal and it's not uncommon for teams to snatch all three points despite being second best throughout the 90 minutes. That isn't what happened at Molineux on Boxing Day.

Granted, Wolves hardly dominated the clash with Manchester United and Andre Onana wasn't exactly overworked, but the visitors were utterly toothless and can have no complaints about being beaten by a side who spent Christmas in the relegation zone having won just three of their 17 league games before the visit of United.

It was laudable of Harry Maguire to conduct post-match media duties as one of the senior members of the dressing room, but his comments when asked to reflect on the game weren't befitting a Manchester United player and former captain.

"I felt going into the second half we needed to up it a little bit," Maguire told Amazon Prime. "The red card has changed the game.

"It's hard enough playing with 11 men in the Premier League, so when you go down to 10 it is tough. If we are being honest, we gave them nothing, they had nothing, they created nothing.

"When it was 11 vs 10, all it was was a corner and the last kick of the game. It is a tough one to take, but we have got to stick together."

United's record from set-pieces this season has been atrocious and it's no wonder with comments like "all it was was a corner". It doesn't matter how much football evolves, set-pieces will always be a huge part of the game and if you regularly concede from them then you don't deserve to win football matches.

Maguire's suggestion that Wolves "created nothing" should also be cause for concern for Amorim. United have sieved chances in a lot of games this season and so if they can come away from a game thinking they gave little away and still lost 2-0 then what chance have they got of arresting their slump?

It's not uncommon for players to claim they feel hard done by after a defeat, but sometimes you just need to take a look in the mirror and admit you've not been good enough.

Claiming a team in the relegation zone created nothing apart from the two goals they scored against you in a 2-0 win isn't a great look for anybody, let alone a Manchester United defender.
