Man United's next transfers once double exit confirmed amid Ruben Amorim fear

Manchester United are yet to make any waves in the transfer market after more than half of the window passed. Despite the lack of business, there's plenty of work to be done for Ruben Amorim.

Amorim has steadied the ship, somewhat, at Old Trafford since replacing Erik ten Hag despite the uninspiring position in the Premier League table. United currently sit in the bottom half and have been on the receiving end of some substandard results.

The lack of depth at left-back is a problem known to those at the clubs for a number of years now. The ageing midfield profiles of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen means new blood is required in the middle of the park and a prolific goalscorer remains absent since Cristiano Ronaldo's exit.

Concluding business in January is always difficult and United have been victims to that. In 2023, Wout Weghorst arrived on loan to replace Ronaldo - he managed two goals. Odion Ighalo's 2020 stint was slightly more successful but even that lacked the conviction needed.

Bruno Fernandes' arrival from Sporting CP in 2020 is their best piece of business in the winter since Juan Mata in 2014. Amad's £19m move from Atalanta is now reaping the rewards but the winger is only just becoming a regular in the first-team under Amorim.

Despite the obvious need for reinforcements, Amorim has kept his cards close to his chest about United's transfer plans this month. "When the window is open, we can try to do something and we will try to do something," he said at the start of the month.

"But I think, in the next weeks, we are going to have more time to train and we can improve, that's the only way." Pressed on which positions he wants to improve, he replied: "I will keep that to myself. But we'll try to do something."

United have been linked with a long list of players since the window opened. No movement has frustrated the fanbase but only the right opportunity is expected to be sanctioned. However, with clubs starting to get desperate, the door may open for late deals.

A striker is a priority and after Randal Kolo Muani became unavailable due to his loan to Juventus, the options are minimal. Left-back is also a key position but the likes of Milos Kerkez and Rayan Ait-Nouri will cost millions.

There could be movement in the final third, though, if Antony and Marcus Rashford both leave. Antony is close to signing for La Liga side Real Betis while Rashford is expected to secure a temporary move to Europe before February 3. Two players who can play out wide leaving means Amorim will be short.

Matheus Cunha fits the profile perfectly for that role. The Wolves star is wanted by United but his imminent new contract at Molineux makes his signature twice as expensive. Should Alejandro Garnacho also leave, with Napoli interested, United will simply have no choice but to sign reinforcements.

Elsewhere, Casemiro's possible exit could mean United may have to strengthen. A long-term successor for the Brazilian is required and while there's excitement over Toby Collyer, a replacement would be ideal to compete with Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte.

In a best-case scenario, United will bring in a left-back and wide attacker before the window closes. It will take plenty of juggling but Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe can't afford to finish in the position they are right now come May.
