Manchester United have less than two weeks to add reinforcements to Ruben Amorim's squad for the remainder of the 2024/25 season. United have been quiet in the January transfer window so far but there is scope for movement.

The Manchester Evening News confirmed earlier this week that talks between United and Serie A side Lecce were ongoing over a potential move for Patrick Dorgu. Wolves' Matheus Cunha is also said to be on their radar.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's running of things on the football side of things has left United lurking in the bottom half of the Premier League table. However, after bringing in Omar Berrada, Jason Wilcox and Dan Ashworth, who has now left the club, there is a plan in recruitment.

John Murtough's exit in April after 10 years at Old Trafford resulted in Matt Hargreaves overseeing the business in the transfer window. He filled the void left by Murtough for the summer transfer window and played a big part in the signings of Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui.

On Tuesday, reports in Italy stated how Hargreaves and intermediaries met with Lecce officials to continue discussions over a move for Dorgu. The meeting was held in Milan and involved Leon Angel and Frank Trimboli of CAA Base as well as Lecce's president and director.

Hargreaves, whose permanent position hasn't yet been revealed, joined United in June as director of player negotiations. However, he joined without a background in football having previously worked for sportswear giants Adidas as marketing director.

Prior to his work with Adidas, Hargreaves had a background in the legal sector. He was briefly seconded into United's legal department in 2008 after previously spending five years working for law firms James Chapman & Co and Brabners.

In total, he spent 14 years with Adidas, having started as a legal counsel before spending six years as sports marketing director for North Europe. It's understood that he excelled in recruiting star clients.

Back in September, The Manchester Evening News reported that Hargreaves shared the same vision as Ratcliffe in changing United's culture in the transfer market by implementing a new strategy.

Interest in Dorgu, who is 20 and has made 56 senior appearances, is a perfect example. Before the summer, Ratcliffe used Kylian Mbappe as an example to his outlet on the market, saying he would prefer to unearth the next golden gem instead of spending heavy on ready-made talent.

"What I would rather do is find the next Mbappe, rather than spend a fortune just trying to buy success," Ratcliffe told the Geraint Thomas Cycling Club podcast. "It's not that clever, is it, buying Mbappe, in a way?

"Anybody could figure that one out. But what's much more challenging is to find the next Mbappe, the next [Jude] Bellingham or the next Roy Keane."
