Man Utd could steal Andy Robertson 'replacement' after failed Liverpool transfer bid
Manchester United could make a statement in the transfer market by targeting a player once linked with Liverpool as a potential long-term successor to Andy Robertson.
United has reportedly submitted an offer for Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes, according to sources in France. The 22-year-old defender remains under contract with PSG until 2026, but discussions over a potential extension are said to have stalled.
It is reported by RMC Sport that United have made an "offer" for Mendes, though specifics about the proposal—whether directed to the club or the player—are currently unclear. The Portuguese international is highly regarded as one of the most promising young full-backs in Europe, and United’s interest signals their intent to strengthen their defensive options.

Liverpool’s prior interest in Mendes reportedly stemmed from their foresight in planning for life after Robertson, who has been a key figure at Anfield. The Reds reportedly had a £22.5m ($28.2m) rejected when Mendes was an 18-year-old at Sporting Lisbon.
According to Goal, Liverpool made a significant offer for Mendes in the summer of 2020, but their bid was quickly turned down by the Portuguese side. At the time, the Reds were in the market for a left-back to support Robertson. After their pursuit of Mendes fell through, Liverpool opted to sign Kostas Tsimikas as an alternative.
Adding to Liverpool's disappointment, Mendes later signed a long-term contract extension with Sporting in late 2020. The new deal included a hefty release clause set at €70m (£63m/$79.2m). He later went on loan to PSG in the summer of 2021 before signing for the Ligue 1 side in 2022.
While Liverpool have yet to make any renewed move for Mendes, United could swoop in. Luke Shaw remains United’s primary option at left-back, but his fitness issues and occasional inconsistency has left Ruben Amorim seeking reinforcements. While the Red Devils have Tyrell Malacia, he seems to have fell out of favor under Amorim.
The Portuguese head coach has withdrawn Malacia after 45 minutes in three of his four starts since he recovered from a knee injury that sidelined the Dutchman for 550 days and was left out of the side for United's 2-0 loss agains Wolves on Boxing Day.
With the lack of options available to him, Amorim has opted to play Diogo Dalot at left-wingback despite it not being his natural position. Its certainly an area which United need to strengthen.
