Trent Alexander-Arnold will no doubt want to quickly put his performance against Manchester United behind him - but the Red Devils aren’t helping his cause.

The Liverpool vice-captain had a night to forget during the 2-2 draw at Anfield on Sunday. The visitors continually managed to find ways of getting in behind down his flank, while he was largely at fault for both of the goals that ultimately cost the Reds all three points, and an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

His performance has raised concerns among some Liverpool fans that his head may have been turned by Real Madrid. Alexander-Arnold is of course in the final few months of his contract at Anfield now, and the Spanish giant has stepped up its efforts to try and sign him during the January transfer window.

Supporters have aired their frustration at the situation - with one fan notably turning on Alexander-Arnold in earshot of the assembled media at Anfield on Sunday - and their mood won’t be improved by some new footage released by United.

The video, recorded from the Anfield Road end, shows the build-up to the visitor’s opening goal from Lisandro Martinez, with Alexander-Arnold’s wayward pass starting the move. From there, the Liverpool vice-captain can be seen slowly tracking Bruno Fernandes as the United captain cuts inside before playing the ball into the penalty area, into the path of Martinez.

Alexander-Arnold can then be seen desperately trying to catch up to the United defender before giving up as Martinez lashes the ball beyond Alisson Becker, sparking celebrations from the away fans.

The footage certainly doesn’t paint Alexander-Arnold in the best light, and rather sums up his performance on the night, with former United captain Roy Keane once again tearing into his defensive capabilities. Nevertheless, Liverpool boss Arne Slot defended his player, having insisted that the interest from Real was not proving to be a distraction.

"Trent has played mostly very good games for the club,” Slot said after the game. “Today was not his best game but that had to do with them as well.

"Sometimes Ryan (Gravenberch) was not close enough to him so it was a two-on-one situation. I would put it more on the quality of (Diogo) Dalot and Bruno Fernandes."
