Peter Schmeichel believes former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel could become Manchester United's version of Jürgen Klopp. Tuchel is currently at Bayern Munich but will leave the club at the end of the 2023/24 campaign after missing out on the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen.

Tuchel, 50, has been linked with a number of clubs since his exit was announced. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher suggested he would have been an ideal candidate for the Anfield job, despite Arne Slot's imminent appointment.

United could yet make a change in the dugout, amid continued speculation over current boss Erik ten Hag. His side is into the FA Cup final but sits in sixth place in the Premier League, having also crashed out of the Champions League at the group stages.

Schmeichel suggested that his former club could look to replace Ten Hag with Tuchel, given his experience at big clubs. The former United goalkeeper claimed Tuchel could even replicate the successes of Klopp at Anfield.

“I like him. I like Thomas Tuchel. I have had the pleasure of interviewing him a couple of times," he said to beINSPORTS. "His football knowledge is fantastic. I think he has been a little bit unlucky with being at two big football clubs at the wrong time of their history, at times when things were not working at every level.

“It’s not that he didn’t do well with Chelsea for instance. I mean, he won the Champions League, didn’t he? I just like him. There’s something about him. He projects a sort of authority. You never compare people, but he has got the same kind of thing that Klopp has, you know.

“If Manchester United was in the market for a manager, he should be somebody mentioned in that respect. He should be. He has that kind of pedigree. He has got, as I said, the authority, he has proven he can win, which I think is really important.

“He does come with a set system, this is how football has been played. Yeah, of course, he is a big club manager, isn’t he? So is Klopp. Klopp would be fantastic for Man United as well.”

Liverpool.com says: There is no doubting Tuchel's managerial credentials and he has already shown that at Chelsea in the Premier League. The German was unlucky to be dismissed by Chelsea and he went on to win the Bundesliga with Bayern. He could yet claim the Champions League again this season and would be an impressive appointment by United.
