Some Arsenal supporters perhaps got little sleep amid their New Year's Eve celebrations and before the trip to Brentford to begin 2025. When their heads hit the pillow tonight, they might be dreaming of who their club can bring in this month.

Because, despite Wednesday evening's win over Brentford, it seems evident that reinforcements are needed if the Gunners are to catch ground on Premier League leaders Liverpool. The uptick in form for Gabriel Jesus will not mask the need for a striker in the minds of most fans, who have been left frustrated (at times) this season.

Jesus' strike against Brentford signalled both he and Kai Havertz - Arsenal's primary centre-forward options - have finally reached double figures as a duo for Premier League goals. That's not title-gunning production.

Furthermore, Arsenal now have their most productive player out of action for at least two months. The hamstring injury to Bukayo Saka - who has nine goals and 13 assists to his name this season - means Mikel Arteta will have to make-do without his star man for a busy period.

As a result, their January plans could be impacted. If Arsenal were to have their dream window - however unlikely that may be, especially given they do not have a successor in place for former sporting director Edu - this is how it may look.

Alexander Isak

If Arsenal can, somehow, convince Newcastle United to part with Isak, the Premier League's most in-form striker, it might turn out to be the transfer of the season. The Magpies have had financial difficulty over recent windows amid spending limits and this January seems to be a repeat.

If Newcastle find themselves hard-pressed against Financial Fair Play regulations, they might be cornered into sell. The reality, instead, is that Newcastle will likely shut-up shop and stay stubborn over any January approaches.

And as things stand, Newcastle are competing for a top-four spot and may secure Champions League football for next season. Maybe it's a case of the club asking him to help them for the rest of the season, before giving him the blessing to leave in the summer.

It seems obvious that Isak would fit like a glove into Arteta's system, with his superb work-rate just as appealing as his goal-scoring. He's bound to be costly, either way.

Nico Williams

Finally capturing Williams would be a huge coup and put Arsenal back as not only title contenders but among the Champions League favourites, if acquired alongside Isak. Unlikely, yes, but the Gunners did only record a net spend of £17million this summer, so there is scope for a mid-season outlay.

And if Williams' reported £40m transfer clause is true, he would be affordable. But should the needle move this January, the Gunners are likely to have tough competition for the Athletic Club winger, not least from Barcelona.

The Catalan giants are in a financial predicament at the moment that could also see Dani Olmo leave for free this month amid registration complications. But so heavy was their interest in Williams over the summer, it would not be a stretch to assume the club would sell one of their current crop to land him.

A quick move across the Basque region would be much easier than having to relocate to a different country. But then, this is a dream Arsenal transfer window...

A new midfielder

Arsenal have been stretched for midfield numbers, at times, this season. A long-term setback to Martin Odegaard while on Norway duty could not be foreseen, and Mikel Merino's shoulder injury in his maiden training session was a rather freak incident.

Still, if one of the main trio - Declan Rice being the third - are out of action for a prolonged spell, Arsenal seem to eventually suffer. Thomas Partey and Jorginho are good back-ups but not spellbinding.

Ethan Nwaneri has the potential to be exactly that, but is still too young for that responsibility, and is more of an attacking midfielder anyway. If a quick and cheap capture can be sought, then great - albeit this would not be the priority but a luxury.

Who that is may emerge as the window goes on, with clubs likely set to sit down with certain players across the coming weeks, and vice versa. Again, this would be a nicety rather than a necessity.

Defender leaves

Kieran Tierney has often been linked with an exit having played just 69 minutes this season since returning from is hamstring injury. A return to Celtic has been mooted for the 27-year-old, who has yet to play in the Premier League so far.

With Arsenal well-stocked at full-back, as well, Tierney is effectively surplus to requirements. Gaining a fee for the Scotsman would help with FFP and making more room for expensive arrivals.

Others may also leave this year - although the Gunners will be mindful of not allowing too many to exit in January as to keep enough numbers in the event of injuries and for the purpose of rotation.
