Enzo Maresca's start to life at Chelsea has meant the January transfer window is expected to be a quiet one. The Blues have proved their early season doubters wrong to sit fourth in the Premier League.

The investment in the summer means the squad is well-stocked. At first glance, more so with the strongest XI, there aren't many areas that require immediate improvement. They are jobs for the summer. However, if the right deal becomes available, a new signing will arrive.

Injuries haven't plagued the campaign as much as last season. The biggest problem Maresca faces this month is the number of players unhappy with their playing time. At least five players at Cobham could be on their way out of the club before February over a lack of opportunity under Maresca.

So, with the January transfer window kicking-off fairly quiet for Chelsea, football.london has taken a step into the hot seat and decided what should happen.

Sign Dani Olmo

Contrary to what was mentioned before, Chelsea should do everything they can to ensure they are in pole position to sign Dani Olmo. The Barcelona playmaker is available for a free transfer after La Liga rejected the club's appeal to register him.

Olmo is determined to remain in Spain after only signing for the club in the summer. However, it may not be up to him and a number of clubs are keeping tabs on the situation. Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City have all been tipped with Chelsea also keen.

Do Chelsea need him? The success of this season means that Maresca's men are competing to return to the Champions League next season and there isn't much competition behind Cole Palmer in the hole. Fortunately for Chelsea, the England international is resting during Conference League weeks but there isn't enough quality off the bench.

Olmo's arrival would significantly improve Chelsea's midfield and creativity. Being available on a free transfer is simply too good to turn down and would be a major statement of intent by Clearlake Capital.

Tough decisions

Ben Chilwell, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei, Joao Felix, Christopher Nkunku, Deivid Washington and Marc Guiu. You'd expect at least five of these players won't be at the club when the January transfer window closes.

The first four on that list would be the first out of the door. Chilwell and Chukwuemeka aren't in Maresca plans and permanent departures would be ideal. However, loan deals with the option are the most likeliest.

Dewsbury-Hall's move hasn't worked and with Olmo through the door, his minutes would be more limited than they are now. Casadei has been linked with Leicester City with interest in Italy, also.

Felix and Nkunku have played in the Conference League and played more in the Premier League than others. Both have reportedly been unhappy with their starts but, in all fairness, they haven't done enough to start regularly. However, their quality is too good to let go mid-season.

£58m transfer unlocked

Romeo Lavia has played more for Chelsea this season than he did last term and his presence has been telling. After signing from Southampton for £58m, the Belgian made just one appearance last season.

This year, he has played 10 times. Injuries have still limited his minutes - with him missing the last four Premier League games due to a thigh injury. When fit, he starts alongside Moises Caicedo in the pivot. The issue is that Maresca hasn't been able to rely on him.

Fortunately, Enzo Fernandez's form has meant the Blues haven't missed him as much. However, as has been the case throughout this piece, Chelsea have to make sure they are in a good place with squad depth all around the pitch.

Getting Lavia back to full fitness will be a priority for the medical team. After that, the hope will be that he can start to show his quality on a consistent basis for the second half of the season.
