Managing Man City - Omar Marmoush transfer puts five players on notice
Jack Grealish's goal with his first touch at Paris Saint-Germain came at a very handy time in his Manchester City career.
Having seen Savinho and Jeremy Doku put in statement performances in recent weeks, Grealish's longer-term struggles has arguably seen him drop to third-choice on his favoured left-wing. So with Doku injured and Savinho replaced at half-time, Grealish scored at a useful moment, even if he could not help City's latest collapse to leave their Champions League hopes in serious danger.
Less than 12 hours after slumping to defeat in Paris, City took the opportunity to turn bad news into good news by announcing the £59m signing of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush.

City have rediscovered their scoring form, with goals all over the attack in 2025, but PSG was a reminder that they still need more. Enter Marmoush.
If Doku is injured, then Marmoush could be a useful addition into the side against Chelsea this weekend and moving forward. His best position is as a striker, but Pep Guardiola has made it clear that Erling Haaland is the number one and his bumper record contract reinforces that.
Marmoush, and any other forward, must accept their place behind Haaland. But that doesn't mean they cannot play together, with Marmoush excelling in Germany alongside a fast, physical striker and in the pockets as a number ten. He can also play on the wings if needed, even if his best position is centrally.
That immediately puts City's number tens at risk of fewer games. Marmoush has 20 goals and 15 assists this season. Haaland is City's top scorer with 23 goals, but only one assist. Phil Foden's 12 goal involvements make him the only other player in double figures for goals and assists. Marmoush should walk straight into the side on form.
That will put both Foden and Kevin De Bruyne at risk in the number ten position, given Haaland won't be moving from the starting line up at least - Although Marmoush's arrival means Guardiola can be far more confident in resting the Norwegian.
Guardiola praised Foden and De Bruyne at Ipswich for their recent form, and Marmoush will challenge both to keep it up - or lose their place.
So if Marmoush does take a position behind the striker, Foden may be shifted out to the wings, suddenly putting Doku, Savinho and Grealish in danger. There are knock-on effects, too, for Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva if Foden and De Bruyne are accommodated further back.
Maybe Bernardo and Foden offer width, rotating with Marmoush and De Bruyne when needed, with the wingers available off the bench. There are endless possibilities, but all have at least two or three quality players watching from the bench.
Guardiola has managed squads with more players than positions on the teamsheet before, and that competition has been behind their sensational success. They won the treble and back-to-back titles in the last two seasons with Julian Alvarez playing a similar role to the one Marmoush will adopt.
But getting this latest dynamic right feels more important given City's struggles this season.
City's strongest XI: Ederson; Lewis, Stones, Dias, Gvardiol; Rodri, Bernardo, De Bruyne, Foden, Marmoush, Haaland.
