Manchester United fell to a disappointing 2-0 home defeat by Crystal Palace after conceding two second half goals to Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The result ends the good run of form the Red Devils were on as they went into the game on the back of three straight wins across all competitions, but this defeat sees them drop one place to 13th in the Premier League table.

Prior to kick-off, Man United paraded their January signings Ayden Heaven and Patrick Dorgu to the Old Trafford faithful and tributes were paid as the club remembered the victims of the 1958 Munich Air Disaster.

On the pitch, Man Utd made the stronger start. Kobbie Mainoo - operating as a false 9 in the absence of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee - was causing problems for the Palace defenders with his positioning and he set up Alejandro Garnacho for a chance before seeing an effort of his own turned on to the post.

However, Palace grew into the game and were perhaps unfortunate to not have taken a lead going into the break. Daniel Munoz headed high and wide at the back post, Ismaila Sarr inadvertently took the ball away from Mateta who was then denied by a superb save from Andre Onana.

Dean Henderson produced a super stop right at the start of the second half as he stayed strong and pushed Bruno Fernandes’ effort wide.

Palace brought on Eberechi Eze on the hour mark and he played a part in the deadlock being broken within minutes. It was his clipped free-kick that saw Maxence Lacroix out jumps Leny Yoro in the air and when his header hit the crossbar, Mateta was first to react to nudge the ball over the line.

United responded by throwing on Hojlund and Zirkzee but they suffered a major injury blow when Lisandro Martinez went down following an innocuous challenge from Sarr. Judging by the defender’s reaction, it would appear he’s facing a long spell on the sidelines.

As the hosts pushed forward for an equaliser they were caught cold as the clocked ticked over into the 90th minute.

Munoz sprung the offside trap an unselfishly squared the ball for Mateta and he slammed the ball past Onana to earn Palace their second win at Old Trafford in successive seasons.
