Manchester United £50m summer transfer can unlock the best from Patrick Dorgu
Patrick Dorgu is in good company when it comes to left-backs who lasted only 45 minutes on their Manchester United debut. Patrice Evra played another 378 games for the club after his nightmare introduction at the Etihad in January 2006.
It's not an exact comparison. For starters, Evra actually played left-back on his debut, unlike Dorgu. And while the Dane was pretty bright against Leicester City on Friday, Evra did endure a debut to forget in defeat to Manchester City.
United have had their issues on the left since Evra left in 2014. That was the summer in which Luke Shaw arrived to replace him, but into his 11th season at the club, Shaw has made only 278 appearances and has only twice managed more than 30 Premier League games in a season.

The arrival of Dorgu in the January transfer window for an initial £25m and a further £4m in add-ons looked to have solved that problem, but the 20-year-old lined up on the right against Leicester City, with Diogo Dalot continuing to try and make it work on the left.
Dorgu was a surprise withdrawal at half-time, having linked up well with Amad during the opening period for United's only bright moments in a dull first 45 minutes. His appearance on the right bemused fans, but Ruben Amorim stuck by it after the game, telling critics that a look at the online scouting platform Wyscout would reveal that he is equally adept on that side.
It did mean Dalot continued to struggle on the left and that was probably the bigger issue, but Amorim interestingly described his wing-backs as wingers after the game on Friday and included the Portuguese in that description.
"If you see the history of Dorgu in the last team he played a lot of games on the right," he said. "We have to have wingers who can play both sides like Dalot. It’s a really important thing, sometimes you need a left foot on the right side to come inside and connect in a different way, and sometimes you need a right-footer to connect and cross more balls."
Amorim is right about Dorgu's history. He played on the right for Lecce as recently as last month, and he has now played 16 career games on the right, against 93 on the left. He might be more accustomed to the left flank, but he is versatile.
The United head coach was adamant that Dorgu would continue to get games on the right, and it will be interesting to see where he lines up against Tottenham next weekend. It was clear from his outing against the Foxes that the advanced positions a wing-back should take up came a little easier to him, but it was also obvious that every attacking player even getting close to the touchline on Friday wanted to cut inside and that led to a congested centre and was easy to defend against.
Amorim needs one more wing-back to get the most out of his 3-4-2-1 system. Those positions could be key to delivering more attacking intent to the side, which has been badly lacking in recent weeks.
Geovany Quenda could be that player. United are keen on the £50m wide-man this summer, with the 17-year-old making a breakthrough at Sporting this season under Amorim. He is another left-footer but has played 48 career matches on the right and just 11 on the left.
Quenda played right wing-back for Amorim at Sporting and the teenager, who turns 18 in April, is a big talent. Quenda was on United's radar even before they appointed Amorim.
If the two are reunited in the summer, then United could line up with Quenda at right wing-back and Dorgu at left wing-back, offering the balance of a winger who can stay wide and another who can come inside and connect the play. That could be key for Amorim.
