Manchester United's Academy is in rude health.

The club's Under-18s have a perfect 10 in their league so far this season and on Wednesday night they secured progress in the FA Youth Cup with a thumping 5-0 win over Coventry City. That sets up a tie at home to Preston North End in the last-32 as United seek to recapture a trophy they last claimed in 2022.

Adam Lawrence's men have swept aside all before them domestically and their victory over Coventry this week was commanding. United were three up inside 13 minutes and completed the comprehensive win with two more goals in the second half.

Star striker Chido Obi-Martin attracts the headlines following his sensational start to life at United and his much-talked-about summer transfer from Arsenal. The young Dane did score twice against Coventry but it was a fellow forward who stole the show.

Gabriele Biancheri netted a hat-trick to continue his fine goalscoring form at age-group level. He has eight goals in six appearances in the Under-18 league, where Obi-Martin has netted five in five, but the Welshman also hit three in four in the UEFA Youth League and is enjoying a stellar campaign.

The 18-year-old helped United make a lightning start to the Youth Cup contest, opening the scoring inside three minutes before doubling his and United's tally on 10 minutes.

Obi-Martin got in on the act just three minutes later, when played through by Biancheri, before both talents scored in the second period, with Obi-Martin drilling in a free-kick from the edge of the box before Biancheri tapped home late on. It could have been better for the hat-trick hero but he saw a tame second half penalty, which he won himself, saved by visiting 'keeper Luis Lines.

"The first thing he said to be at the end was he should have scored six," said boss Lawrence of Biancheri after the game when praising the performances of his goalscorers and their ability to play together despite both preferring to be the focal point of the attack.

"Gabe started off the left but we did a bit of work with him when we had possession of the ball with Harry Amass playing higher on that side with Gabe playing closer to Chido.

"Obviously they're both number nines so it was trying to find a way where they're both in the team but trying to utilise both of their qualities. I think their understanding between each other and the way they played with one another was really good."

Biancheri joined United from Cardiff City in 2023 and has been capped by Wales at Under-19 level. He now has 16 goals in 17 appearances so far this term across all competitions.
