Manchester United 'consider cut-price Ole Gunnar Solskjar return' as manager search begins

Manchester United could appoint former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as they face financial restraints following the sacking of Erik ten Hag.

According to Manchester Evening News, United may be forced to look at unemployed options for their next permanent manager with Ten Hag due as much as £17million in compensation following his dismissal.

Solskjaer would cost nothing to hire having been out of work in the three years since his own sacking by United in 2021 and, according to the report, could help former team-mate Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has been put in interim charge.

Former England manager Gareth Southgate has long been linked with the Old Trafford job, and has friendly relationships with both sporting director Dan Ashworth and board member Sir Dave Brailsford and is thought of highly by chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Former Barcelona head coach Xavi is also available after leaving the Spanish giants over the summer. Thomas Tuchel, who was interviewed over the summer before Ten Hag's contract extension was confirmed, has recently agreed to become England manager.
