Manchester United have reputedly yet to make contact regarding signing Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres despite reports claiming they already had ahead of a potential transfer during the summer window.

Gyokeres looks set to leave the Portuguese champions at the end of this season, but a move in January could conceivably happen. United head coach Ruben Amorim has said the club will not sign any players from his former employers next month before stopping short of extending that same promise to the summer.

Someone else, though, could always pay the player's £83million release clause and convince Gyokeres to depart Lisbon before then. However, Sporting are reportedly willing to negotiate down that price to potentially as low as £50 million.

FootballTransfers claims Newcastle United are in ongoing talks with the player's agents. HCM Sports Management represents Gyokeres, namely the former Swedish footballer Hasan Cetinkaya, who is also Victor Lindelof's agent.

The Magpies are reportedly leading the race to sign Gyokeres. However, they would seemingly have to sell his international teammate Alexander Isak to comply with the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules.

A move to Newcastle would appeal because selling Isak would effectively guarantee Gyokeres starts every game. There is reportedly recognition that this may not be the case at Arsenal, Manchester City, or United due to their depth up front.

The latter are reputedly considered contenders, though, despite the presence of Joshua Zirkzee, Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund. However, as Tuesday's edition of the Portuguese newspaper A Bola has insisted, any interest has yet to materialise into any contact.

Sport Witness reports that the publication has stated in no uncertain terms that exploratory contact has yet to happen. They dispute reports in the English media on Monday claiming that was the case while stopping short of such a step occurring in the future, suggesting it would not be surprising if interest existed.
