Manchester United's head coach, Ruben Amorim, is reportedly on the hunt for a new goalkeeper to challenge Andre Onana. Manchester Evening News readers agree and are unhappy with the goalkeeper's recent performances.

Despite a strong start to the season initially, the 28-year-old has made several high-profile mistakes since Amorim took the reins at Old Trafford. Amorim is said to be keen to bring in a keeper who can compete with Onana for the number one spot, with Altay Bayindir not viewed as a serious contender.

Bayindir, who transferred to United from Fenerbahce for £4.3million in September 2023, has only played four times for the club - all in FA Cup and League Cup matches. Onana has let in 26 goals in 19 Premier League games this season and had a particularly poor December, making errors against Nottingham Forest, Viktoria Plzen and Wolves.

His hesitation at corners was capitalised on by Arsenal, who scored both goals from corner kicks in their 2-0 win over United, before Wolves' Matheus Cunha scored directly from a corner in United's 2-0 defeat at Molineux. United paid Inter Milan £47.2m for Onana just a year after he left Ajax on a free transfer and the Cameroon international has managed 20 clean sheets in 70 appearances.

Commenter 1954brad thinks: “Newcastle scored two from balls floated to the six yard line, they are the keepers every day of the week. Onana is rooted to his line, he was signed for his ball skills and passing, but even that is not very good. A new keeper, striker and left-wing-back are a necessity this window, without these we will get dragged even further into a relegation fight. And as much as I feel for Zirkzee he must know if you don't perform well you're likely to be subbed.”

CyprusRed says: “I never had a problem with David De Gea. A goalie's first objective is to keep the ball out of the net. De Gea did that more often than not. Onana is a different type of keeper. I don't understand the current trend of a goalkeeper having to be good 'with the ball at his feet'. Aren't there enough players in other positions to do that?”

Mbaz believes: “The issue lies with Amorim, this coach is similar to Graham Potter. Even if the entire squad is changed, it won't work out with him. Manchester United needs a result-oriented coach, one who can adapt his tactics to the available squad, boost every player's morale, and avoid falling out with players. Zidane succeeded at Madrid not only because of his tactics but also due to his ability to boost player morale.”

MickyFinn replies: “The trouble here is that not only did United get Onana, they compounded it by signing Bayindir who is not even remotely good enough to be a viable option. Amorim has tried most of these players now, and you can see from his face he already knows most of them aren’t up to it. United need to pull their fingers out and get the likes of Rashford, Casemiro, Maguire and Dalot sold and bring in two or three replacements starting with an attacking left wingback. We were told United can’t or won’t make signings because of the financial situations, but Chelsea managed to do it and no one can tell me they had the money, they sold better than we have. Outs are key.”

Platty7 agrees: “Onana is another disastrous signing of the Ten Hag era, he makes so many mistakes for an alleged experienced ‘top keeper’ it's ridiculous. If you look at recent goals conceded he's just static, doesn't move or even try to save them. Even his kicking, which we supposedly bought him for, hasn't been all that. For any top club you need a top keeper & Onana isn't one!”

Fenman41 adds: “Onana is a great shot stopper, but a very poor goalkeeper. He does not understand why he has to control his six-yard box, his spatial awareness is non-existent and he has no idea about narrowing the angle. A competent goalkeeper who has a grasp of these things would stop most of the goals Onana concedes. They seem to do that at the other end. Why on earth did they allow Dean Henderson to leave?”

RAYK feels the same way: “Agreed Henderson is a Premier League kind of goalie, he would get to corners & crosses Onana does not go for. Onana thinks he is agile enough to save them by staying on his line, but how many has he conceded from corners & crosses?”

Toothpick disagrees: “Come on. Onana is a good enough goalkeeper for us. He could be one of the reasons why we cannot win the league, but he is definitely not the reason why we are in 14th position.”
