Casemiro will be walking a disciplinary tightrope when Manchester United welcome Rangers to Old Trafford for their penultimate Europa League league phase outing on Thursday evening.

The Brazilian, who will celebrate his 33rd birthday next month, has been cautioned twice in the Europa League so far this season, earning yellow cards in United's home wins over PAOK and Bodo/Glimt.

Europa League rules state that any player who accumulates three yellow cards prior to the quarter-final stage will have to serve a one-match suspension.

Furthermore, players who earn more than three yellow cards have to serve an additional one-match ban after an odd-numbered caution, such as when they earn their fifth or seventh yellow card.

Despite not being involved since United's last Europa League outing - a 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen on December 12 - Marcus Rashford is also just one yellow card away from a one-match ban after being booked against both Fenerbahce and Plzen.

Rashford has only been included in one of the last nine matchday squads - making the bench for the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United on December 30 - meaning he is unlikely to be involved for the visit of the Gers. However, the England international has not given up hope of getting his United career back on track.

Meanwhile, captain Bruno Fernandes heads into the clash with Rangers also having accumulated two yellow cards in the Europa League so far this season. However, he is not on the brink of a ban after his two cautions resulted in a red card in the 3-3 draw with Porto back in October.

Europa League rules state that a player who has already received two yellow cards that contributed to a red card will not been given a one-match ban after collecting a third booking.

A cluster of United players find themselves on one yellow card in the Europa League this season, but they are two bookings away from a ban.
