Gary Neville has questioned Matthijs de Ligt's decision-making after Manchester United were penalised for handball against Liverpool.

United were dogged in their performance against their rivals and took a deserved lead through Lisandro Martinez. However, their lead was short-lived as Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo responded.

There was a flashpoint midway through the second-half when Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross struck De Ligt's arm. Referee Michael Oliver initially opted to allow play to continue.

However, after an intervention from Chris Kavanagh on VAR, the official was instructed to go to the monitor and the decision was overturned. The hosts were handed an opportunity to take an unlikely lead following a lacklustre display and did so when Mohamed Salah stepped up to fire Liverpool in front.

Speaking after the incident, Neville said: "I think his hand is high. I think he could be in trouble is my initial reaction. I saw it in real time when your hand is up there, we will see.

"He might get away with it with VAR not wanting to interfere. As soon as your arm is high like that in the box, you are asking for big trouble.

"Why is his hand there? I don't know why his hand is there at all. That is the one where you don't get away with it and he's not going to get away with it."

Ruben Amorim's side continued the fightback and restored parity through Amad. The Ivorian ghosted into the 18-yard box and fired low past Alisson Becker. United were looking to return to form and in doing so, they had eyes on denting Liverpool's title aspirations.
