Manchester United have a huge £36m transfer decision to make amid January reset
Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee ran down the tunnel on Monday night after being substituted in the 33rd minute. He was met by cheers and boos when he came off by some United fans inside Old Trafford.
There are some rumours circulating around that the Dutchman could be heading out on loan after a disappointing start to life at United. Erik ten Hag brought the striker in from Italian club, Bologna for £36.5 million, plus add-ons.
Zirkzee was one of the best prospects in Serie A and Europe and is known for the false 9 position which he has excelled in under Thiago Motta.
However, with the transfer window opening yesterday, what will Ruben Amorim and Manchester United do with the 23-year-old?
Amorim has been confident in that he can steady the ship at United and has said that he wants to improve the players he currently has at his disposal instead of spending in the transfer window.
The Portuguese head coach could be saying this for two reasons, in the summer transfer window the Reds splashed out £180 million on five new players.

Alongside this INEOS had identified the £496.52 million debt United are carrying and announced a ‘club -wide cost review’ to cut the debt down. This is why so many cuts are happening at the club at the moment.
This goes hand in hand with why they are struggling with their compliance to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
The sacking of Ten Hag would have had a massive impact on not just Zirkzee’s future at the club but all of the players that had been brought in under the Dutch manager.
When the media and public found out that Amorim likes to play a 3-4-2-1 formation, the first thought everyone had where do certain players fit into this system. The first time United would have played a back three consistently since Louis van Gaal’s reign at the club.
One of the players that would have been in a scenario of uncertainty would have been Zirkzee because he does not fit the Viktor Gyokeres profile of striker Amorim would want in his starting XI, running in behind and good hold up play.
Then the next idea was whether United’s number 11 could play as one of the 10s behind the striker, Zirkzee did have some cameos off the bench in that position but there were no noticeable performances to start him.
It then became evidently clear against Newcastle United on Monday that he did not suit that position, as Newcastle United pressed high and did not allow the home side to get in behind, it was also telling that United were still underperforming, making critical and simple eras.
Amongst this and Zirkzee not having the best start in the Premier League, as well as the tension of cuts being made at the club with 250 members of staff at the club being made redundant, it almost felt like the former Bolonga player got the brunt of everything when he came off.
It seems that Zirkzee will need time to adjust to the pace and the physicality demands of the league, like Hojlund did last season.
The worry for United fans is that they have paid for another striker who is a false nine and does not have a position that suits him in the team or off the bench.
If Amorim and Zirkzee stay resilient and adjust his skill set to the system currently in place, Zirkzee could have a chance of succeeding at Old Trafford.
