Cristiano Ronaldo says he has not set any plans for retirement but hinted it could come within the next two years.

The former Manchester United star scored an 87th-minute bicycle kick in Portugal’s 5-1 Nations League win over Poland on Friday to take his tally to 135 goals in 215 caps, having scored a penalty 15 minutes earlier.

United captain Bruno Fernandes netted his 24th goal for his country in the contest as Portugal secured their place in next year’s Nations League finals. In 2022, while at United for his second stint, Ronaldo revealed his hope to play into his 40s.

The 39-year-old Al-Nassr talisman will shortly fulfil that ambition but isn’t thinking too much about retirement. Speaking after the win over Poland in Porto, Ronaldo said: "I just want to enjoy. The plan for retirement? If it has to happen, in one or two years… I don’t know.

"I’m turning 40 soon… I really want to enjoy, as long as I feel motivated I keep going. The day I don’t feel motivated, I will retire."

Ronaldo has already outlined that when the time comes to call his international career, he will be the one to announce it first. As for life after football, the superstar says he harbours no ambitions to become a manager and has suggested his future could lie outside of football.

Previously speaking to Portuguese broadcasters NOW, Ronaldo said: "When I leave the national team, I won't tell anyone in advance and it will be a very spontaneous decision on my part, but also a very well thought-out one.

"Right now what I want is to be able to help the national team in their upcoming matches. We have the Nations League ahead of us and I would really like to play.”

He added: "At the moment, I'm not thinking about being a coach of the first team or any team. It doesn't even cross my mind, I've never thought about it.

"I don't see my future going through that. I see myself doing other things outside of football, but only God knows what the future holds."
