Manchester United injury update: Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Raphael Varane latest news and return dates

Manchester United’s injury issues continue to improve heading into their final two matches of the season.

Erik ten Hag’s side bring their Premier League campaign to an end this weekend against Brighton, before the attention turns to an FA Cup final against Manchester City later this month.

Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Lisandro Martinez all returned for the midweek win over Newcastle, to significantly bolster Ten Hag’s options, and the situation in defence could be improved further as Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane near comebacks of their own.

Harry Maguire and Mason Mount are believed to be close too, but it is less positive news for Luke Shaw and the likes of Anthony Martial and Tyrell Malacia continue to be hampered by injuries.

Here is your latest update of Man Utd injury news and return dates...

Harry Maguire

A muscle injury has kept Harry Maguire on the sidelines since the draw with Burnley at the end of last month.

He will not return in time to face Brighton this weekend, but United hope that Maguire will be back for the FA Cup final at Wembley.

“I think Harry Maguire, I think it's a fair chance that he will be available [for the final],” Ten Hag said on Thursday. “We plan [for] him.”

Luke Shaw

However, it appears increasingly unlikely that Shaw will be available for the final later this month.

The left-back has been out since February with a serious muscle injury and a recent setback has delayed his comeback further, leaving Shaw’s hopes of going to Euro 2024 with England this summer potentially in doubt.

“Luke is more complicated. In this moment, let's say it's a less chance that he will make it,” Ten Hag admitted.

“But there is still a very small, reduced chance. He had a setback, now we have to find out how far [from a return] he is."

Raphael Varane

With Raphael Varane leaving United this summer, he will be desperate to make at least one more appearance for the club.

The Frenchman has been out for six weeks with a muscle injury, but has now returned to training and is set to be involved again before the end of the season.

Victor Lindelof

Like Varane, Victor Lindelof is back in first-team training and hoping to hand United a major boost in defence after nearly two months on the sidelines.

Ten Hag has been forced to play Casemiro and Jonny Evans at centre-back in recent weeks, but his options are set to be bolstered for the FA Cup final, and potentially for the trip to Brighton.

The United boss said: “We have seen yesterday Licha Martinez [is back], he had a good session now as well. There were also others on the pitch like Rapha Varane, Victor Lindelof, they returned on the pitch. We have to see how far [off a return] they are on Sunday.

“Tomorrow we have off, Saturday we have training, and then we will see what we have.”

Potential return date: Sunday May 19, vs Brighton

Mason Mount

Mount is looking at a return from a “very unlucky”, but as yet unspecified, injury which he picked up last week.

Ten Hag told MUTV ahead of the win over Newcastle on Wednesday: “It's a minor issue. So he's definitely not out for the season. I think a couple of days, then he'll return. Maybe Newcastle is too short but I think he can be available for Brighton.”

Anthony Martial

Martial underwent surgery on a groin issue in January.

With his contract expiring in the summer, many expect he has played his final game for United, with no update provided on whether he will feature in the club’s remaining two matches.

Potential return date: Unknown

Tyrell Malacia

United do not expect to see Malacia out on the pitch this season.

Having picked up a serious knee injury last summer, he has spent the whole year on the sidelines with multiple setbacks making it one to forget.
