Manchester United legend gives Ruben Amorim green light to return to the club
Manchester United legend Jaap Stam has opened the door to making a return to the club in a coaching role, but admits Ruben Amorim is yet to pick up the phone.
Stam spent three seasons at United as a player, winning six major trophies including an historic treble in the 1998/99 season.
He was sold to Lazio in 2001 after a fallout with Sir Alex Ferguson but the former United manager admitted years later that it was an error of judgement.

Stam is still looked upon as one of United's best defenders of the modern era and he has since turned his hand to management.
The Dutchman was a penalty shootout away from guiding Reading to promotion to the Premier League in 2016/17 and he has since taken in spells in charge of Dutch sides PEC Zwolle and Feyenoord, as well as MLS side FC Cincinnati.
And he has admitted he would love to return to United in a coaching capacity.
"I’d love to coach at Manchester United but they haven’t picked up the phone," Stam told Sports Lens.
"I think everyone who has been associated with the club would love to go back and help, having been in management myself I have coached and helping them in any role would be great.
I’m always open for talks because I’d love to see the club back winning trophies and maybe I could help coach the defence, but with the manager lots of new staff have come in so they have plenty of options. But you never know."
Amorim has won four of his first eight matches in charge since taking over from Erik ten Hag as United manager. And Stam feels United must accept it will take time for change this season before pushing on to challenge for trophies next term.
"Everyone is hoping that Manchester United can compete for the Premier League next season and the manager will as well, but in the meantime it’s very important to win matches and climb up the table.
"It’s a transition period and the players need time to adapt, but there is still pressure to win matches with his new style and to be in a decent position in the table.
"Ruben Amorim will be working hard to see which players best suit his system but until then there will be a lot of change."
