Manchester United will be hoping to return to winning ways against Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday.

United lost 3-1 to Brighton in the Premier League last weekend and that result was a brutal reminder of the size of the challenge that Ruben Amorim has taken on in Manchester.

Amorim said this United team might be the "worst in the club's history" and the players will have to respond when Scottish side Rangers make the trip to Old Trafford this week.

United have won their last three games in the Europa League against PAOK, Bodo/Glimt and Viktoria Plzen, but each match has been a contest and Rangers will hope to take all three points.

Regarding the team news, Luke Shaw is expected to return from his muscle injury in the next few weeks, although the Rangers clash will come too soon and he will be unavailable again.

Here's how our writers think United should line up...

The Europa League has to be United's priority even though they will head to another team above them in the Premier League table on Sunday.

As dreadful a side as United are, their squad depth is worse and it is almost impossible to improve the starting XI that were dismissed by Brighton. Joshua Zirkzee and Amad were the only respectable performers but the former should switch to the wing against Scottish Premiership also-rans.

Andre Onana is not up to it but neither is Altay Bayindir, so it's still Onana. For now.

Bayindir will feel he deserves to start after Onana's howler at the weekend, but his excellent shot-stopping display against Arsenal shouldn't gloss over his previous work at the club.

I'd relocate Amad to the right wing-back role, start Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo in midfield, and welcome Alejandro Garnacho back into the starting team after he was moved to the bench against Brighton.

Although Zirkzee deserved to start in that match and emerged with credit, he didn't look like scoring and United need goals. So, it's over to you again Rasmus Hojlund. The 21-year-old has struggled to make it stick in recent appearances and could really do with a goal tonight for his confidence.

With a league game to come in three days, rotation is going to have to come into Amorim's thinking. Martinez should be recalled after dropping to the bench at the weekend and join Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire in a defence that has not been used in the last two games.

Toby Collyer has impressed via the bench in recent matches and deserves an opportunity as a starter in place of Mainoo, who has struggled for form for much of this season.

Amad should be restored to the right-sided wing-back role, granting Noussair Mazraoui a rare breather, meaning Garnacho can come back into the team and start in attack. Zirkzee was one of United's better performers against Brighton and deserves to keep his place.
