Luke Shaw is set to go more than a year without starting a match for Manchester United.

Shaw has been sidelined since December 4 with a hamstring injury, having last started for the club away to Luton Town on February 18.

United head coach Ruben Amorim said last week Shaw was due to be back within two weeks but he clarified on Thursday night that the timeframe related to Shaw's return to training.

"No, he’s going to be fit to train with the team," Amorim said. "And then we have to start doing small minutes. We don’t have a lot of time to train, we have to put in some exercises in ten minutes, then he has to make extra work to improve his fitness.

"So I don’t know. It’s two weeks to start training and to start thinking about putting him in a few minutes."

Centre backs Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro both came off in the 2-1 Europa League win against Rangers on Thursday night. Both will be assessed before United travel to London for their fixture against Fulham on Sunday night.

"Leny has a pain, also Mattha, I think was a bruise, a touch," Amorim added. "Leny was a little bit tired, he’s playing more in this moment so we have to be really careful. We’ll see. I don’t know."

Amorim indicated Andre Onana would be recalled despite Altay Bayindir's impressive performance against Rangers. Bayindir made his first European start for United four days after Onana was culpable for two of Brighton's goals in their 3-1 victory at Old Trafford.

Bayindir is yet to play for United in the Premier League and Onana has committed several high-profile errors since Amorim took over in November. The United coach admitted he considered the ramifications of taking Onana out of the team days after his mistake against Brighton.

"It’s always an even fight but this was rotation," he reiterated, "was prepared. I also think about the mistake and then the idea I send to you guys and the fans but the rotation was done, everything was prepared and we deal with that normally.

"We think to have two really good goalkeepers, they need time to play, they need the space in the team, so this rotation was prepared. But that mistake was my concern but, in the end, we continue with the same plan that we did last week.

"I see [Bayindir] in the same way. He is prepared to help the team and that is the most important thing."

Amorim led United to their sixth win in his 16th game in charge against Rangers but they have won only two of their ten Premier League matches since he arrived in Manchester on November 11.

United's finest performances under the Portuguese came away to Liverpool and Arsenal when they had free midweeks to prepare. Amorim is already itching for pre-season even though United have two cup competitions to compete in and 16 league fixtures remaining.

"I think we need that to get that feeling of belonging," he opined. "For that, we also need time to train, to stay together, and that is really important.

"We don’t have that…. I don’t know the name here, internship? Like sleeping before the matches. Sometimes, that detail is really important.

"Pre-season, creating, spending three weeks together, creating something, and then you want to create something new with the players. I want them to know me in a different way, not always preparing the matches with stress, we don’t have the time to do that.

"I think it’s really important and I think it’s the secret of teams. Even when you have the best players, if you don’t you have that feeling it’s really hard to win so I want to build something like that here. But we need time from that."
