Central midfielder Marouane Fellaini was forced to leave the international fixture between Bosnia and Belgium on the 29th minute as he injured his left knee and is expected to be out for the rest of the month. At first, the injury came across as a serious one and many had thought he would be out for a couple of months, but thankfully he will be on the sidelines for only a couple of weeks.

On the other hand, manager Jose Mourinho will certainly make a complaint or two too to Belgium coach Roberto Martinez for selecting a player who was already carrying an injury ahead of the game, and on top of that, the international team had finished as winners of their group so Fellaini’s presence was not badly needed.

Come to think of it, a couple of years ago the fans were more than satisfied for when Fellaini was not available for selection due to injury or suspension. Now, the supporters have shown their frustration and sadness towards his injury all over social media, and it’s quite interesting to see how things have changed within a short time.

Given that United have key fixtures against the likes of Liverpool, Benfica and Tottenham Hotspur this month, it extends the reason to why Fellaini is even a bigger miss as he’s seen as the perfect plan B for Mourinho. He might not be the player that was born to play for the Red Devils, however, his work ethic on a regular basis is highly underrated and he never complains about the role given to him by the manager, which is why David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal are a massive fan of the Belgian.

According to the player performance-based website, Squawka, Fellaini’s Premier League numbers so far this campaign; three goals in six appearances, 17 out of 26 duels won, 11 out of 16 tackles completed and two key passes accomplished. By now, fans within England will know that the 29-year-old can be utilised in many ways and can definitely be a huge threat in the opponent’s box.

The naughty elbows and silly fouls leading to the opposition scoring a goal may be remembered more when the name Fellaini is mentioned, however, he has seriously improved his all-round play, from controlling his attitude and behaviour to using his aerial and technical ability to his best. When it comes to an individual like the former Standard Liege and Everton player, it’s always come down to getting behind the player and making sure his confidence is top notch from the start of the season till the end.

Since arriving to Old Trafford in the summer of 2016, Mourinho has constantly praised Fellaini from time to time and has revealed why the star is a huge player for the team on and off the pitch. Against Hull City last season in the EFL Cup semi-final, Fellaini ran to the sideline to celebrate his goal with the manager, who defended his poor run of performances in all competitions at the time.

Not many things are certain for Manchester United, in the short-term or in the long run, but Fellaini is expected to be at the club for many years to come especially if Mourinho remains as the manager of the club. If he gets back into his groove once he returns from injury, it would not be a surprise to see him beat his individual record of 11 league goals in a single season which he managed within the 2012/13 campaign.
