Manchester United were beaten 3-1 by Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday.

Yankuba Minteh put the visitors ahead with just five minutes on the clock. United saw a couple of penalty appeals turned away after the goal but they were eventually awarded a spotkick when Joshua Zirkzee was dragged down in the area by Carlos Baleba. Bruno Fernandes stepped up and made no mistake from the spot.

Brighton thought they had taken the lead early in the second half through Joao Pedro but the goal was disallowed for a foul on Diogo Dalot in the build-up following a VAR check. Just seven minutes later Brighton did take the lead through Kaoru Mitoma.

The away side ended the game as a contest when an Andre Onana howler allowed Georginio Rutter to make it 3-1.

Here are how the players rated at Old Trafford:

Andre Onana

Got a hand to Yankuba Minteh's opening goal on five minutes, too porous for Joao Pedro's disallowed goal, rooted to his line for Mitoma's and committed a howler for Georginio Rutter's clincher. 2

Matthijs de Ligt

Moved to the right of the back three and was caught on his heels for the long ball that led to Minteh's goal. Not the first time we have seen that. 4

Harry Maguire

Had such an uncomfortable first half he irked the crowd by clearing a ball Onana could have gathered. In hindsight, perhaps that was the right call. 5

Leny Yoro

A calmer performance after the chasing he was given by Kamaldeen Sulemana against Southampton. Stood off Carlos Baleba to cross for Rutter. 5

Noussair Mazraoui

Struggled against the classy Kaoru Mitoma and could not keep up with him when he crossed for Minteh to score and then when Mitoma scored. 3

Manuel Ugarte

Carlos Baleba and Yasin Ayari had the better of the midfield battle. Got booked shortly before he was substituted after the hour. 5

Kobbie Mainoo

A brighter and more urgent performance than his midweek struggles against Southampton. Failed to increase his performance level beyond half-time. 6

Diogo Dalot

Intervened just before half-time to deny Danny Welbeck when he seemed poised to put Brighton ahead again. Fouled for the disallowed goal. 5

Bruno Fernandes

Mishit a shot wide before he converted nervelessly from the penalty spot to equalise. His decision-making was often awry otherwise. 5

Amad

Made the penalty happen through his pressing that proved Brighton were eminently gettable. The only forward who looked capable of scoring from open play. 6

Joshua Zirkzee

Continued his crowdpleasing form off the bench as a starter, pressing effectively and winning the penalty when Baleba grabbed him. 6

Subs

Toby Collyer

Could not influence the game. 5

Alejandro Garnacho

Went down too easily inside the area. 5

Antony

Brought on with six minutes of normal time remaining. 5

Rasmus Hojlund

The ball hit his back. 5

Manager

Limited the changes again and got it right by recalling Zirkzee, improving United's press. He was powerless to improve United's goalscoring. 5
