Manchester United will be going in search of the sweet taste of derby day success when they face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

United, who last won at the Etihad in March 2021, got back to winning ways on Thursday evening, coming from behind to beat Viktoria Plzen 2-1 at the Doosan Arena in the Europa League, courtesy of two goals from Rasmus Hojlund.

The Dane's second half brace put the brakes on a run of two consecutive defeats, meaning United will be determined to build on their midweek triumph when they make the short hop across the city for the first Premier League meeting of the season between the two clubs.

Having made five changes from the 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest for the midweek trip to the Czech Republic, United head coach Ruben Amorim is likely to continue with his rotation policy for the trip to City, meaning a handful of players will be eyeing recalls.

Despite being guilty of committing errors in successive games, Andre Onana is poised to retain his place in goal and maintain his record of starting every Premier League game since joining United from Inter Milan ahead of the start of last season. He will be eyeing a seventh league clean sheet of the campaign.

Ahead of him, Amorim could hand a recall to Leny Yoro after he remained an unused substitute against Plzen. He has been building up his minutes recently and could make just his second competitive start for the club since arriving from Lille in the summer.

Matthijs de Ligt has started every game under Amorim so far and is likely to continue in the centre of the back-three. Lisandro Martinez could also retain his place, meaning it could be the same defensive line as the one that started against Forest.

As far as the wing-backs are concerned, Amorim's rotation policy could see Amad move back into the right-wing back role after he started further forward on Thursday evening. Diogo Dalot, as a result, could switch back to the left flank.

Amorim has frequently rotated in midfield, highlighted by his decision to start Bruno Fernandes next to Casemiro against Plzen, meaning Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte could be recalled. They started the defeat to Forest next to each other and there is a growing belief the duo will form Amorim's first-choice midfield.

In attack, the prospect of Mainoo and Ugarte being recalled to the starting XI means Fernandes could revert to one of the two No.10 positions, tasked with making things happen from a more advanced role.

Mason Mount made a positive contribution off the bench on Thursday and could be rewarded with his second Premier League start under Amorim. His off-the-ball work is really valued by Amorim and that particular trait could be valued in a fixture of such importance.

Hojlund, having started on the bench against Plzen, was always likely to get the nod as the starting striker against Pep Guardiola's side. His second half brace only strengthened his case for leading the line.
