Manchester United will go into the latter part of the season dangerously short on attacking options, with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Antony not being replaced in the January transfer window - but some United fans in The Manchester Evening News comments section are pleased that the club showed some restraint despite one or two proposed late deals.

United were considering options near the end of the transfer window to add some firepower into their forward line and provide cover to existing squad members, such as out-of-favour Chelsea man Christopher Nkunku or Bayern Munich's young forward Mathys Tel. The club pulled out of any talks on transfer deadline day, and Amorim will continue to rely on improvements from the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee until the summer.

Some supporters were frustrated to see that United seemed to come out of the window shorter than when they started. The sight of Tel on a plane to London, having turned down Tottenham Hotspur and then changed his mind following links to United, was a shame for some.

Others think that United made the right call with not putting up good money for such an unproven signing. Reader Steviweavi says that improvements can come with time: "I'm pleased. For far too long we've been taken for mugs and have repeatedly overpaid. At last, Ineos drew a line in that sand. We've had a lucky escape. Hojlund can score if he's given the right service consistently. Amorim has time now on the training field to put this right."

Commenter FrankM16 writes: "Tel would have been madness. [Victor] Osimhen was the only realistic signing, and then that never got off the ground. Hojlund can score - and it's down to Amorim to train him and provide him with chances. We've got forwards with pace, but we don't play with pace.”

Manupito says: "I personally think our two strikers can deliver if given the right pass. United's attacking problems are in midfield where Bruno [Fernandes] is not creating chances for strikers to score. There is no creativity in midfield, Bruno plays off position and is not coordinating attacks as expected. United needs a box-to-box attacking midfielder. The coach needs to relook at Bruno's attacking role in the team."

Others would have liked to see the Academy utilised more in the search for new options. Iceman1975 adds: "They should have given [Joe] Hugill a chance and a few of the youngsters. If I'm Hugill, and every time I get sent out on loan, I would seek a permanent move because I'm being told I'm not good enough for the first-team. How old is he now and how many loans have gone past?

"Our wingers need to start crossing the ball in for the strikers instead of dribbling the ball all the time. Pass the ball more, it's selfish play. Strikers also need to be more intelligent when making runs and creating spaces."

Alex1999 agrees: "The answer may be at the club already. There are Academy players scoring for fun, who deserve a chance to play at the top level. These lads are full of confidence because they're hitting the net on a regular basis and the first-team needs some self-belief right now. Can it get much worse?

"These kids deserve their opportunity to show what they can do in the Premier League. Let's give it to them!"
