David Moyes approached Darren Fletcher in the Goodison Park tunnel last weekend and asked how his two boys were doing in the academy. Moyes would have found out the answer for himself if he tuned in to watch Manchester United's game in the FA Youth Cup quarter-final on Friday.

Jack Fletcher and Tyler Fletcher are twins and both started against Arsenal at the Emirates. The Under-18s were without Chido Obi, who was kept behind to feature in the first-team squad on Sunday, and it looked like a mistake to leave him at home until Jack Fletcher opened the scoring.

United missed a handful of chances before Jack Fletcher's superb breakthrough and they would have been ahead earlier if Obi had started having spurned chances. But that roll of the dice looked to be vindicated when Fletcher found the net in the first half. He fashioned a yard of space, cut inside from the left and finished beautifully into the top right corner, much to the disdain of the Arsenal supporters, who booed his celebration.

Arsenal made plans for 10,000 fans to attend the game. There was a much smaller number on the night, but it included a pocket of United fans who made the trip and they made impressive noise from the first whistle to the last, giving their support to the U18s and mocking Arsenal about Robin van Persie.

They enjoyed Fletcher's goal and rightly so. It was the kind of strike that would be produced by Premier League players at the Emirates and it's not the first time the 17-year-old has scored a peach.

Earlier in the season, he scored a volley from around 35 yards that dipped under the crossbar against Barnsley, and his inclusion in first-team training sessions has been deserved.

The U18s easily brushed aside Coventry City, Preston North End and Chelsea on their way to this quarter-final, scoring five goals in each of those fixtures. However, it was never going to be as easy against Arsenal on their home turf and with rising star Max Dowman in action for the Gunners.

There is excitement building in North London about Dowman's obvious potential and he sent a warning about his ability when he threaded the eye of a needle to play in Ceadach O'Neill. Jaydan Kamason denied O'Neill with an outstanding last-ditch tackle to block his effort. Kamason recorded two assists from right-back in the previous round against Chelsea and he will push towards making a first-team debut if he continues to perform like he currently is.

United need a new signing to start at right wing-back, but Kamason should be given the chance to prove himself in pre-season. He has the required qualities to play in that role - is comfortable in attacking and defensive scenarios - and is having an underrated academy campaign.

But it didn't take Arsenal too long to equalise in the first half. Dowman looked irritated at going behind and demanded the ball. There was eventually a pass played over United and Louie Copley finished brilliantly with a dink over keeper William Murdock.

There was nothing to split the sides by the interval and it was an entertaining half of football between two high-quality academies. Jack Fletcher and Dowman had come to fore so it wasn't a surprise to see the latter fire Arsenal ahead from the penalty spot just before the hour mark.

Arsenal started the second half with improved intensity and Reece Munro conceded a penalty after a winding run from Downan. It looked a really soft decision but Dowman converted.

The Youth Cup has been the platform for dozens of special players to launch their careers and there's a reason why Dowman has been training with Arsenal's first-team at 15-years-old.

United had plenty of time to respond but did not look like scoring. Jack Fletcher tried his luck from the edge of the box and found the side netting. James Scanlon couldn't have his usual impact. Gabriele Biancheri was quiet and struggling to evade his marker.

The U18s needed a special moment to equalise and Kamason stepped up. The right-back had been superb all game and scored a goal that any striker would be proud of.

It felt fitting that the game headed to extra-time. The 90 minutes wasn't enough to split the two talented teams and Lawrence, who punched the air on the touchline when Kamason scored to make it 2-2, was animated again when giving instructions in the team huddle.

He had been proactive with his substitutions in the closing stages of normal time, and it was three players introduced from the bench that combined to score in extra-time.

Samuel Lusale latched onto a superb pass from Jim Thwaites and played a delightful cross into the box. Bendito Mantato was there to finish and Arsenal's players fell to their knees.

United's youngsters found a way to force extra-time and dug deep and managed to get the job done during the extended period.

There were some fantastic scenes at the full-time whistle. The Youth Cup campaign has been the only positive story at United this season and the Class of '25 look a tad special. You certainly wouldn't bet against them lifting the trophy and it was significant to win without Obi.

Obi has been the academy player to generate the most headlines this season, but the U18s have bags of talent and Kamason's performance thoroughly deserved the man of the match award. He could be knocking on Ruben Amorim's door soon.
