Manchester United vs Charlton LIVE!

Marcus Rashford was on target for the sixth successive match in all competitions as his late double helped Manchester United beat third-tier Charlton Athletic 3-0 to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals on Tuesday.

A much-changed United had the better of the early openings and deservedly took the lead in 21st minute as Brazilian forward Antony curled a stunning strike into far corner. Antony's countryman Fred then curled a sensational effort towards goal from a free-kick, but saw his rasping shot come out off the inside of the post.

United had further chances to add a game-clinching second before Rashford stepped off the bench to fire two late goals to put the seal on an eighth victory in a row in all competitions for the home side.

Charlton’s players are being celebrated as heroes in front of their 9,000-strong away end. It was an incredible effort pushing Man United until close to the end when Marcus Rashford killed the game.

Full time! Man United 3-0 Charlton

21:56 , Marc Mayo

Rashford’s late doubles confirms United’s place in the final four.

GGGOOOAAALLL!!! Man United 3-0 Charlton

21:55 , Marc Mayo

90+4 mins: THAT REALLY IS THAT!

Rashford again!

21:52 , Marc Mayo

90+1 mins: Charlton want a handball and then a penalty for a separate claim. Neither given.

GGGOOOOAAALLL!!!! Man United 2-0 Charlton

21:50 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: RASHFORD WRAPS IT UP!

Pellistri leads the break and finds the England striker to score for the sixth game in a row. That should be that.

Four minutes added on.

21:50 , Marc Mayo

88 mins: Fraser looks for Stockley in the box and it lands for Leaburn, who wants to take a couple of touches to get off a shot yet finds a clinical Martinez challenge depriving him of the ball.

21:48 , Marc Mayo

86 mins: Charlton load the box and Maguire beats Stockley well in the air.

United rush forward through Pellistri and Wan-Bissaka, the Uruguayan finding McTominay but a shot on the turn bobbles up for the keeper.

Chance Man United!

21:45 , Marc Mayo

83 mins: Maynard-Brewer somehow tips Eriksen’s attempt wide!

Pellistri on for Elanga as United begin to ressart themselves. This is his debut, in fact.

21:43 , Marc Mayo

81 mins: Eriksen denied a sealer at the near post as Ness throws in a fine block.

Two changes for Charlton before the corner as Stockley and Henry for Rak-Sakyi and Sessegnon. Both loanees have played well.

21:41 , Marc Mayo

80 mins: Maguire goes on an adventurous run that Sessegnon mops up. The Charlton man carries the ball clear, nutmegs Maguire and gets bodied in the process.

Yellow card.

21:38 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: Fraser’s free-kick is low and comfortable for Heaton to claim.

21:37 , Marc Mayo

76 mins: Malacia booked for cleaning out Fraser after United want a free-kick of their own as Ashley-Brewer potentially carried the ball over his 18-yard line.

Replays not conclusive.

21:36 , Marc Mayo

75 mins: Into the last 15 minutes as Charlton chase that one chance to truly test Heaton to snatch a leveller.

One goal sends this game to penalties, although one for the hosts surely ends it as a contest.

21:34 , Marc Mayo

73 mins: Sessegnon with fine work on the left and he clips a ball in for Leaburn to challenge... Heaton comes out with authority to claim.

Around the grounds

21:32 , Marc Mayo

Newcastle look to have their semi-final spot wrapped up as Joelinton makes it 2-0 against Leicester at St James’ Park.

21:31 , Marc Mayo

70 mins: Sometimes you wonder if a player is attempting a shot or a pass and Casemiro will admit to his rocket from 50 yards out being neither! Well off target, in every sense.

Nizaar Kinsella at Old Trafford

21:28 , Marc Mayo

Charlton’s supporters are enjoying Old Trafford and chanting: “It’s only 1-0, it’s only 1-0, how s*** must you be? It’s only 1-0.”

21:27 , Marc Mayo

66 mins: Payne on for Morgan in the Charlton midfield.

Man United chance!

21:26 , Marc Mayo

65 mins: A fine stop from Maynard-Brewer parries away Garnacho’s effort on the counter!

21:25 , Marc Mayo

63 mins: Sessegnon has pushed up to left wing with that Charlton change, Rak-Sakyi coming wide right.

Nizaar Kinsella at Old Trafford

21:22 , Marc Mayo

Charlton have been even more competitive in the second half, playing more of the game in Man United’s half and prompted Erik ten Hag to bring on Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford.

Triple Man United substitution

21:21 , Marc Mayo

60 mins: Mainoo’s night is over as he joins Antony and Fred in coming off. Casemiro, Rashford and Eriksen introduced.

Charlton bring O’Connell on for Blackett-Taylor.

Meanwhile...

21:19 , Marc Mayo

Dan Burn has given Newcastle the lead against Leicester in the other Carabao Cup quarter-final of the night.

21:18 , Marc Mayo

57 mins: Blackett-Taylor stands up a ball to the far post after dazzling Malacia.

Leaburn decides to go with a high foot against Martinez’s head and connects with the Argentine, conceding a sloppy foul.

21:16 , Marc Mayo

54 mins: Fred with a nice disguised pass into Mainoo and the teenager attempts a delicate flick back to Elanga, which fails to come off.

The debutant has been all tricks-and-flicks so far.

Antony then whips a long-range shot wide.

21:14 , Marc Mayo

52 mins: The good news for Charlton is that United have failed to come flying out the blocks in this half, to kill the game off.

With every passing minute, the value of an equaliser rises...

Nizaar Kinsella at Old Trafford

21:12 , Marc Mayo

No matter how good or aggressive Lisandro Martinez is, he is going to lose some of duels to big men.

Six-foot four-inch Miles Leaburn has been a classic target man tonight and created a first chance for Charlton and Scott Fraser with his flick on.

GOA-NO!

21:10 , Marc Mayo

49 mins: Elanga is well offside as he turns in Wan-Bissaka’s nice ball across goal. He went too early and didn’t need to...

21:08 , Marc Mayo

47 mins: Charlton pounce from a Leaburn flick-on and Fraser fires over from 20 yards.

We didn’t see enough from the Addicks frontman in the first half, that’s what his presence can do!

21:07 , Marc Mayo

46 mins: No changes at the break and little change in United’s tactics either as Maguire looks for another long pass out to Garnacho, although this one fails to come off.

Kick-off! Manchester United 1-0 Charlton

21:05 , Marc Mayo

The Carabao Cup quarter-final is back underway!

Antony’s goal all that separates the first and third-tier sides.

Second-half coming up

21:00 , Marc Mayo

A promising finish to the first period for Charlton but they simply have to score the next goal.

United have forged plenty of openings already and look good for a second, and maybe third, if they can kick into another gear.

Stats check

20:57 , Marc Mayo

Man United’s authority has shown with 73 to 27 per cent dominance in possession.

They also lead ten to two in shots but both have managed a single shot on target.

Around the grounds

20:53 , Marc Mayo

Only one goal between the teams here while it’s all square at St James’ Park between Newcastle and Leicester.

It’s straight to penalties if level after 90 minutes...

Half time! Man United 1-0 Charlton

20:49 , Marc Mayo

Antony’s excellent effort the difference between the sides but the Addicks ended the half strongly.

20:48 , Marc Mayo

45+2 mins: Charlton ended the half strongly against a porous United midfield as Clare fires a low cross into the six-yard box. Heaton is first to it.

20:46 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: Three muinutes added on as Wan-Bissaka puts in a corker of a slide tackle on Blackett-Taylor.

20:45 , Marc Mayo

43 mins: Again, after Antony slips to allow Dobson a run forward, the pass isn’t too off-target but Malacia finds it easy to collect and defuse the danger.

20:43 , Marc Mayo

40 mins: Charlton hit the counter through Fraser after Mainoo is caught and a whipped early ball in is well diverted by Martinez on the stretch.

Only a goal up, United have made their extra quality count in key moments tonight.

20:38 , Marc Mayo

37 mins: Rak-Sakyi wins a free kick off Mainoo after a mazy diagonal run inside.

Morgan whips an effort in from roughly the same area Fred just hit the post... and it flashes wide!

OFF THE POST!

20:36 , Marc Mayo

35 mins: Fred crashes a free-kick against the inside of the post!

Nizaar Kinsella at Old Trafford

20:36 , Marc Mayo

A blow for Man United as Diogo Dalot goes down injured. A resurgent Aaron Wan-Bissaka comes on but a big headache for Ten Hag who is short in the position.

Man United injury

20:35 , Marc Mayo

33 mins: And Dalot, who has only just returned from a hamstring knock, is coming off. Wan-Bissaka getting ready.

20:34 , Marc Mayo

32 mins: Blackett-Taylor has looked threatening for Charlton when getting in Dalot’s face with the ball.

A lay-off leads to a cross from which Rak-Sakyi comes out second best, conceding a goal kick.

20:32 , Marc Mayo

30 mins: We’ve not seen a huge amount from Mainoo so far, United favouring the flanks and not really using the area around the D he has operated in.

An attempt at a cute backheel-turn doesn’t quite come off as his teammate fails to see it coming.

20:29 , Marc Mayo

26 mins: Martinez joins the attack to slot a lovely through ball in for Garnacho, whose cutback is primed for McTominay but the midfielder hesitates and looks around as if he’s expecting someone else to unleash a piledriver.

Pretty much every United attack looking dangerous.

 (Manchester United via Getty Imag)
(Manchester United via Getty Imag)

20:26 , Marc Mayo

23 mins: That goal has only improved United’s confidence and a goalmouth scramble demands a pair of blocks from the Addicks.

A clash of heads between Sessegnon and Antony will stop play though, before a corner.

Nizaar Kinsella at Old Trafford

20:24 , Marc Mayo

A trademark Antony finish breaks the deadlock. He has all the time to measure that left foot, curling finish that he is known for after a sustained spell of possession.

GGGOOOOAAALLL!!! Man United 1-0 Charlton

20:22 , Marc Mayo

21 mins: ANTONY!

The Brazilian cuts inside and curls a beauty into the top corner from 25 yards out. Sublime.

20:22 , Marc Mayo

20 mins: A more settled period of the game for Charlton, whose three central midfielders are quite wide and advanced.

Certainly chances for United on the counter in response.

20:18 , Marc Mayo

17 mins: Back underway after Clare receives treatment, he’ll carry on.

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

20:16 , Marc Mayo

14 mins: Charlton win their first corner and Heaton does well to punch clear under pressure before a shot lands straight on his chest, while still on the ground! Fortunate.

A break in play with Clare down after the goalkeeper’s clearance.

Chance Man United!

20:14 , Marc Mayo

12 mins: Inniss throws himself in the way of Fred’s effort after the Brazilian tees up a shot from the D.

More good work down the left flank from the hosts but, again, Malacia’s corner is woeful.

20:13 , Marc Mayo

11 mins: United looking most threatening when attacking with pace and tempo but a lack of accuracy in their passing so far.

Charlton themselves unable to hold onto the ball for long, with a 56 per cent pass success rate so far.

Nizaar Kinsella at Old Trafford

20:10 , Marc Mayo

I guess it is news to no one by now but Alejandro Garnacho is really good. He looks to be the main threat early on. Another shot comes in and is deflected wide.

20:09 , Marc Mayo

7 mins: Once again, Garnacho has Clare on toast after a fine Maguire crossfield ball.

It’s a tight angle but not a million miles away as his shot goes off target.

Nizaar Kinsella at Old Trafford

20:08 , Marc Mayo

“You’re only here for the Charlton” and “shall we sing a song for you” are being sung in the huge away end at Old Trafford. Every touch or tackle cheered and it is excellent support from Charlton.

20:07 , Marc Mayo

5 mins: Lots of space across the pitch for both teams, United breaking quickly after Fraser’s loose pass and Sessegnon pokes Antony’s run out for a corner. Malacia wastes the set piece.

20:05 , Marc Mayo

3 mins: Dalot places a shot over the bar after Garnacho beats Clare for pace and rolls a ball in. Decent early chance, that.

“Is this a library?” chant the away fans with not quite every seat sold in the United end.

Nizaar Kinsella at Old Trafford

20:03 , Marc Mayo

Man United’s need for a new striker is quickly highlighted with Anthony Elanga playing down the middle. At least it sounds like a deal for Wout Weghorst is pretty close.

20:03 , Marc Mayo

1 min: Blackett-Taylor makes a confident first run into the box and pokes a cross for Martinez to clear.

Elanga leading the line for United, Mainoo in behind.

Nizaar Kinsella at Old Trafford

20:02 , Marc Mayo

Charlton aren’t the only London club with interest in this game with Fulham loanee Steven Sessegnon and Crystal Palace loan forward Jesurun Rak-Sakyi both starting for the Addicks.

This is a huge showcase for Rak-Sakyi in particular who might see a Championship club hijack his loan.

Man United vs Charlton begins!

Nizaar Kinsella at Old Trafford

20:00 , Marc Mayo

Kobbie Mainoo is really highly regarded at Manchester United and has been knocking on the door for a first-team start for some time.

He is often compared to Paul Pogba due to his style and stature in central midfield. Manager Erik ten Hag has had him on the bench for a number of weeks.

Erik ten Hag on Kobbie Mainoo

19:35 , Marc Mayo

“For him it's a great opportunity, he did very well during the winter camp in Spain. He also did very well against Everton in a friendly.

“He deserved to play, so I'm happy to give him the opportunity - it's about deserving it. He has to [be ready], we have to step up.

“I think we have a strong team today. Licha [Martinez], it's his first time back, but he's had some good training sessions and will be ready for this game. You always have to play your game, which means 100 per cent focus.”

The hosts in their traditional red kit tonight with Charlton in white.

Dean Holden previews the match

19:19 , Marc Mayo

“Really really proud, it’s going to be a great night for Charlton Athletic,” says Addicks boss and huge Red Devils fans Holden, who’s native to nearby Swinton.

“The main focus is the performance obviously but we just said to the players, they need to make sure they embrace the situation. Not many young players in particularly get to come to an arena like this.

“So we’ve got to make sure we give the best version of ourselves on the pitch.”

One change for Charlton

19:15 , Marc Mayo

Craig MacGillivray drops out in goal for the fit-again Ashley Maynard-Brewer.

Otherwise it is unchanged from the weekend win over Lincoln as Charlton opt against the five-man defence that helped them beat Brighton.

Sam Lavelle was the penalty shootout hero that night but he’s on the bench here.

Mainoo makes his debut

19:11 , Marc Mayo

Well, that is a surprise!

Teenager Kobbie Mainoo, just 17 years old, is in the United line-up tonight as he joins Anthony Elanga, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho in attack. Not quite clear who will be the leading striker of that quartet.

Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez pair up in defence with no Jack Butland in the squad as Tom Heaton makes his first start in United colours.

Evening Standard score prediction

18:18 , Marc Mayo

Charlton cannot be written off of course and perhaps the distraction of a cup competition could help galvanise the team during a difficult period, although United just look too strong.

Currently on a seven-match unbeaten streak, it’d be a major shock to see them beaten on home soil.

Manchester United to win, 2-0.

18:14 , Marc Mayo

Predicted Charlton XI: Maynard-Brewer; Clare, Inniss, Ness, Sessegnon; Morgan, Dobson, Fraser; Rak-Sakyi, Leaburn, Blackett-Taylor.

Early Charlton team news

18:09 , Marc Mayo

Charlton’s Sean Clare is free from suspension after missing the win over Brighton, although goalkeeper Joe Wollacott will miss out due to a broken finger.

Potential replacement Ashley Maynard-Brewer will also face a late fitness but Chuks Aneke could make the squad following his recent hamstring injury.

18:04 , Marc Mayo

Predicted Manchester United XI: Butland; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Martinez, Malacia; McTominay, Fred; Antony, Eriksen, Elanga; Martial.

Early Man United team news

17:58 , Marc Mayo

Lisandro Martinez could be handed his first United start since winning the World Cup with Argentina, replacing either Raphael Varane or Luke Shaw in central defence.

Harry Maguire is another pushing to feature from the off.

Donny van de Beek is expected to miss out following the injury picked up against Bournemouth, while it’s unlikely Jadon Sancho will get a run-out yet.

New signing Jack Butland, meanwhile, could make his debut in goal and Bruno Fernandes is suspended.
