Manchester United vs Liverpool LIVE!

Liverpool put in a clinical display to beat Manchester United in a pre-season friendly on Saturday night.

Fabio Carvalho, Curtis Jones and Kostas Tsimikas were all on the scoresheet for Arne Slot’s side against the Red Devils, who created plenty of chances but now go into the Community Shield off the back of a third defeat in five games this summer.

It’s the Community Shield up next for Man Utd, they face neighbours Man City at Wembley in a 3pm BST kick-off at Wembley on Saturday, August 10.

The following day sees Liverpool welcome Sevilla to Anfield for a friendly and, immediately afterwards, they’ll face Las Palmas behind closed doors. Both teams begin their Premier League campaigns the following weekend.

Man Utd vs Liverpool highlights

  • GOAL! Carvalho breaks deadlock early on

  • GOAL! Salah crosses for Jones to make it 2-0

  • GOAL! Tsimikas wraps up Liverpool win

Full time!

That’s a third pre-season win in a row for Liverpool and a third defeat in five friendlies for Man Utd!

Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool | 90 mins

Heading towards the conclusion in Columbia, the board goes up for three added minutes.

Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool | 84 mins

02:29 , Marc Mayo

Wan-Bissaka is sat on the turf requiring treatment. Doesn’t look too drastic and he’s helped back to his feet.

Scanlon replaces him anyway.

Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool | 82 mins

02:28 , Marc Mayo

The official attendance is announced: 77,559. Not bad, that.

Also the largest football (soccer) crowd for a game in North or South Carolina. Which was something we had all been looking out for.

Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool | 80 mins

02:26 , Marc Mayo

Feels kind of wild that United have had 18 of this game’s 25 shots. Liverpool deserve credit for being clinical but their defending has been a little vulnerable and United can take heart from parts of their attacking efforts.

Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool | 73 mins

02:19 , Marc Mayo

A stretcher is on for Fish, this is bad news for the 21-year-old who has spent the last two years on loan at Hibernian and has featured often during this pre-season.

Mather is on along with Oyedele and Murray.

Liverpool bring Stephenson on.

Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool | 70 mins

02:16 , Marc Mayo

Fish booked for a bit of a lunge and he’s came off worse, with the physio on and the young defender looking in pain.

Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool | 68 mins

02:14 , Marc Mayo

Loads of changes and United are peppering Jaros’ goal but still can’t make the breakthrough.

Wheatley had one of them, he’s on with Eriksen and Antony for Collyer, Mount and Amad.

Liverpool now bring on Morton, Endo, Chambers, Phillips, Doak and Blair. Gravenberch, Elliott, Salah, Carvalho, Tsimikas and Van den Berg (who only came on at the break) off.

Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool | 63 mins

02:10 , Marc Mayo

VAR may well have chalked that off, Salah could have been considered offside in the build-up.

But as it is, that’s a lovely overlap by Bradley and Jota’s shot was poorly handled by Onana.

Liverpool sure to claim the pre-season bragging rights here.

GGGOOOAALL!!! Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool | Tsimikas, 61'

02:07 , Marc Mayo

THREE FOR LIVERPOOL!

Tsimikas adds his name to the scoresheet after a shot is parried right to him.

Man Utd 0-2 Liverpool | 60 mins

02:06 , Marc Mayo

Liverpool bring Nyoni on for Jones while United are readying Antony.

Man Utd 0-2 Liverpool | 57 mins

02:04 , Marc Mayo

How is it not 2-1?!

McTominay is picked out far too easily in the middle of the box and Tsimikas blocks one shot before Jaros turns his second wide!

The corner is nodded straight at the Czech keeper.

Man Utd 0-2 Liverpool | 53 mins

02:00 , Marc Mayo

Amass with a jink in the box and his cross is easy for Van den Berg to gobble up - he tries to chest it back to Jaros and the keeper wasn’t on the same wavelength! They avoid an embarrassing own goal, at least.

Up the other end, a slick slide tackle by Amass steals the ball off Salah in the United box. He’s made a couple of good moves on the Egyptian tonight.

Man Utd 0-2 Liverpool | 50 mins

01:57 , Marc Mayo

Casemiro with a tame shot held by Jaros after United’s break sees Amad hauled down, but he gets his pass off nonetheless.

Looks like Casemiro reckons Sancho should have got on the end of his ball, not sure when exactly that would have happened though.

Man Utd 0-2 Liverpool | 48 mins

01:55 , Marc Mayo

Interesting that Rashford came off at the break but of course he was nursing an issue from the last friendly. It’s still Sancho through the middle, with Mount wide left and McTominay in behind.

Onana slips when collecting a bouncing ball and is moving a little uneasily. No sign of any physios yet.

Man Utd 0-2 Liverpool | 46 mins

01:52 , Marc Mayo

Two changes from Liverpool too, Konate off for Van den Berg and Jaros replaces Kelleher in goal.

Kick-off!

01:50 , Marc Mayo

Triple change coming up from United, on come Fish, Bennett and McTominay. Lindelof, Evans and Rashford off.

Before we get going, have a look at the Jones goal which made it 2-0. That’s the scoreline as we restart.

Man Utd and Liverpool fans fume at severe traffic delays

01:45 , Marc Mayo

Hundreds of Manchester United and Liverpool fans stranded outside the Premier League giants' pre-season friendly in South Carolina due to traffic problems.

Liverpool and United faced off at the Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, attracting thousands of fans to the 77,500-seater stadium.

But many supporters were stuck in traffic outside the ground, missing the majority of the first half as Fabio Carvalho and Curtis Jones gave Liverpool a deserved 2-0 lead.

One fan trying to attend the game wrote on X: "1.5 hours in traffic and still not in the game. NEVER AGAIN!"

Ruthless Liverpool with the advantage

01:40 , Marc Mayo

Clinical stuff from Slot's men, who lead through goals from Carvalho and Jones having created far fewer chances overall.

United have managed nine shots to their four, with Rashford looking on really sharp form, but Kelleher has made a couple of nice saves.

Plenty of time for this friendly to swing a few more directions, neither side has kept the ball too well so chances should keep coming.

Cracking atmosphere too, by the way.

Watch Liverpool's opening goal

01:35 , Marc Mayo

A deflection, sure, but a lovely turn beforehand as Fabio Carvalho netted ten minutes in.

Half-time!

01:32 , Marc Mayo

Liverpool fans here are booing Rashford, which is a sign of how threatening he’s been tonight. The very same fans then let out an ironic cheer as Casemiro slips a pass straight through to Kelleher.

Salah gets upended by Amass and no sign of a stoppage-time board as Liverpool line up the free-kick... dealt with and that’s the break!

Man Utd 0-2 Liverpool | 43 mins

01:29 , Marc Mayo

Collyer breaks through on the underlap and his cross from the left is tipped out for a corner.

United go short before a deep cross draws the offside flag.

Man Utd 0-2 Liverpool | 41 mins

01:27

There’s a big roar of anticipation every time Salah gets on the ball and Amass does really well to snatch in a tackle, which the United fans in situ greet with a cheer of their own.

Man Utd 0-2 Liverpool | 38 mins

01:25 , Marc Mayo

It’s not been a bad performance by United but they’ve been nothing like as clinical as Liverpool.

Ten Hag’s side have created double the shots from less of the ball, too.

GGGOOOAALLL!!! Man Utd 0-2 Liverpool | Jones, 36'

01:22 , Marc Mayo

IT’S TWO!

Salah escapes Collyer and his low cross is tapped in by Jones at the far post!

Man Utd 0-1 Liverpool | 32 mins

01:19 , Marc Mayo

Tsimikas pops up in the box and throws a foot at a slightly overhit through ball, a weak connection and the keeper holds it.

Man Utd 0-1 Liverpool | 29 mins

01:15 , Marc Mayo

Huge queue of traffic outside the ground, feels like we’re near-enough at the 78,000 capacity with any empty seats owned by those still waiting for a parking space.

Liverpool corner after a United mix-up and Onana fumbles it... the recycled ball is way too deep from Bradley.

Man Utd 0-1 Liverpool | 24 mins

01:11 , Marc Mayo

Great run by Rashford and he gets the ball back from Amad, his shot from a tight angle pops up and Kelleher tips over.

A bit of pushing and shoving in the box before the corner comes in... eventually it drifts deep and Rashford’s left-footed effort flashes narrowly wide!

He’s on one tonight.

Man Utd 0-1 Liverpool | 22 mins

01:09 , Marc Mayo

Sancho shows the heading ability of a diminutive winger after a sweet cross from the right is met unmarked by his most delicate of headers. Not enough contact and it drifts almost out for a throw.

Man Utd 0-1 Liverpool | 20 mins

01:06 , Marc Mayo

So many errant passes in this opening 20 minutes. Both managers are probably tearing their, err, hair out.

Man Utd 0-1 Liverpool | 17 mins

01:03 , Marc Mayo

End-to-end stuff. Rashford breaks nicely off a Jota opening and his pass is just behind Collyer.

Liverpool come forward before United counter again, Wan-Bissaka’s cross is too deep though.

Man Utd 0-1 Liverpool | 14 mins

01:00 , Marc Mayo

Another sloppy Liverpool pass, from Konate, gifts Rashford a moment to smack a shot goalwards and he goes first time... just wide!

Man Utd 0-1 Liverpool | 13 mins

Sunday 4 August 2024 00:59 , Marc Mayo

Well the early energy of this occasion has been matched with a goal.

And a chance for a leveller as Casemiro dinks a sweet pass for Mount, who sees a shot parried well. Kelleher then grabs a low cross from Collyer.

GGGOOOAALLL!!! Man Utd 0-1 Liverpool | Carvalho, 10'

Sunday 4 August 2024 00:57 , Marc Mayo

LIVERPOOL LEAD!

Carvalho with time and space to arrow in a shot across goal. Lovely cut-back to beat Casemiro, a bit easily it has to be said.

Man Utd 0-0 Liverpool | 8 mins

Sunday 4 August 2024 00:54 , Marc Mayo

Liverpool again give the ball away and Mount drills a low shot straight at Kelleher.

Man Utd 0-0 Liverpool | 5 mins

Sunday 4 August 2024 00:51 , Marc Mayo

Good work by Lindelof then Amass to win the ball off Liverpool in their own half, before Amad flies a shot way over the bar from outside the box.

Man Utd 0-0 Liverpool | 3 mins

Sunday 4 August 2024 00:49 , Marc Mayo

Proper noise from the American fans with a round of ‘Allez, Allez, Allez’ and Liverpool might well be the better-backed team here.

Good early pressure and energy off the ball from Slot’s team too.

Man Utd vs Liverpool | Kick-off!

Sunday 4 August 2024 00:45 , Marc Mayo

It’s a first outing for Liverpool’s new dark blue away kit and Man Utd are in their traditional red, as the designated home team.

Here come the teams!

Sunday 4 August 2024 00:41 , Marc Mayo

Very decent crowd in attendance here and the US national anthem has pumped up the atmosphere!

Hard to tell which team is better supported because, well, everyone is wearing red...

Five-minute warning!

What Liverpool fans should look out for

Sunday 4 August 2024 00:32 , Marc Mayo

Diogo Jota’s stint as a central striker is a key plotline for Liverpool tonight while Fabio Carvalho scored against Arsenal as he looks to bag a spot in the squad on the wing.

Ryan Gravenberch needs to impress given Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones’ good form as the Arne Slot era begins.

Meanwhile, Arne Slot has been speaking about Dominik Szoboszlai's absence. He told LFCTV: “I think it's our 13th day of the tour. Dominik joined every session and every game, and we played the last one two days ago.

“I think it's a bit of fatigue and we don't want to take any risks because we fly back to Liverpool tonight and on Tuesday all the other players arrive as well, so we want to start off then with all the players available and we didn't want to take any risk with him today.”

Key Man Utd plotlines to follow

Sunday 4 August 2024 00:26 , Marc Mayo

For United, how Jadon Sancho fares will be a fascinating watch given Rasmus Hojlund’s injury absence for the start of the campaign.

Joshua Zirkzee may not be entrusted with the start at Wembley after less than a week of training so Sancho can stake his claim for a run up front by performing well in a central role tonight.

Victor Lindelof is also competing for a spot with Harry Maguire absent, Leny Yoro injured and Lisandro Martinez only just starting his pre-season.

Of course, how the youngsters fare will also be interesting with Toby Collyer the more likely to have a spot to play for given United are yet to sign a new central midfielder.

Lots of pre-season action tonight

Sunday 4 August 2024 00:14 , Marc Mayo

It feels like the US tours that have become a staple of the summer for many European teams have all shifted eastwards after stints on the west coast.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have just kicked off in New York while Chelsea are 4-1 down to Man City in Ohio.

Chicago is currently hosting a goalless draw between Aston Villa and Club America with Crystal Palace and West Ham just kicking off in Tampa Bay. Wolves are also in Florida, facing RB Leipzig a little later on.

Arne Slot heaps praise on Harvey Elliott

Sunday 4 August 2024 00:00 , Marc Mayo

Liverpool boss Arne Slot paid tribute to Harvey Elliott’s display against Arsenal in midweek as the midfielder makes himself the standout player for his team’s pre-season.

The new manager said: “He had two great assists, but what I believe is that the team created these assists for him as well.

“Playing out from the back, getting him in the right positions – or another No10. Then it is up to him to bring the most of these situations and he did that today with two assists.

“If I am a bit hard on him, I think there were two or three other situations where he could have done better.

“But that's what the team is doing for him; we make sure he and the other ones like Mo [Salah] and like Fabio [Carvalho] come in the right positions where they can show their quality. Harvey did that today with two good assists.”

Good news for United as Marcus Rashford starts after his injury scare last time out, with Antony also fit for the bench.

Harry Maguire misses out as a precaution.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the XI and Scott McTominay among the subs amid speculation over their future.

Plenty of kids on the bench with Harry Amass at left-back again and Toby Collyer partnering Casemiro in midfield.

Erik ten Hag happy with job security

Saturday 3 August 2024 23:25 , Marc Mayo

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has insisted that he prefers a contract extension to 2026 over a longer-term deal.

There had been speculation he would be sacked after United ended eighth last season, their lowest ever finish in the Premier League. A shock victory over champions Manchester City in the FA Cup final, however, earned the 54-year-old Ten Hag a lifeline.

His contract, set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season, was extended for another year by United's new management led by billionaire and INEOS chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe after they looked at potential replacements but retained Ten Hag.

Ten Hag told The Guardian he did not need the financial security that comes with a longer-term contract.

"No, I wanted this," the former Ajax manager said.

"So I think two years in football is already a long time and in two years we will see what we have built on top of what we have achieved now.

"I have enough security in my life and in my career and I have enough belief that I know when I have a team I will achieve success."

Head-to-head record

Saturday 3 August 2024 23:15 , Marc Mayo

The tide has turned in this derby. Liverpool lost only two of 15 meetings from March 2016 to April 2022. However, the Merseyside giants have won only once in their five matches since.

Tonight's venue

Saturday 3 August 2024 23:00 , Marc Mayo

We are in the city of Columbia in the state of South Carolina in southeastern USA tonight as Williams-Brice Stadium plays host to arguably English football’s biggest clubs.

Built in 1934 but renovated several times to the 78,000-seater arena it is today, it is the home of American College Football team the South Carolina Gamecocks.

The upper east deck is known to physically sway at moments of serious jubilation from the fans but we’re unlikely to see that tonight.

Beyonce and Jay-Z are among the artists to have played, while Pope John Paul II and Barack Obama have also addressed crowds here. Presumably not on the same night...

Saturday 3 August 2024 22:45 , Marc Mayo

We are two hours away from kick-off in this friendly with it a late one for fans in the UK (but not too late to stay up and follow via your pals at Standard Sport, right?!).

A good atmosphere building outside the ground on a warm day in Columbia, but we could get some rain and even thunder later on.

Score prediction

Saturday 3 August 2024 22:30 , Marc Mayo

This should be a fun test of both defences with a little bit more pressure on United, given this is their final friendly.

A 2-2 draw.

Early Liverpool team news

Saturday 3 August 2024 22:15 , Marc Mayo

Curtis Jones overcame a knock to start in Liverpool’s win over Arsenal.

After a 4-2-2-2 formation was deployed against Real Betis, Slot returned to a more orthodox 4-3-3 last time out with Mohamed Salah in his usual spot on the right wing.

Like United, they remain without several international stars.

Early Man Utd team news

Saturday 3 August 2024 22:04 , Marc Mayo

Leny Yoro and Rasmus Hojlund have been ruled out for three months and six weeks, respectively, as injuries once again hit United.

Marcus Rashford and Antony were forced off against Real Betis, so are doubts. The Red Devils will welcome back their Euro 2024 and Copa America stars after this game, so Harry Amass could continue at left-back.

Ten Hag has confirmed the club won’t take risks on Rashford.

This is it for the Red Devils, who are now less than a week away from starting their season in the Community Shield against Man City.

Erik ten Hag’s fine-tuning will continue after this game of course, with the return of their Euro 2024 and Copa America contingent, but there is a little extra pressure to get things right to round off their tour of the USA.

Liverpool also head home after this clash in South Carolina but have an extra week to prepare for the Premier League’s kick-off, having won both of their games so far in pre-season.

Kick-off comes at 12.45am BST tonight, with Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia our venue.
