Man United vs Newcastle LIVE: Premier League result, score and reaction as Isak stars and Zirkzee booed off
Manchester United suffered another negative result as Newcastle United ran out 2-0 winners in the Premier League at Old Trafford, with home fans booing the team off at both half-time and full-time - as well as jeering Joshua Zirkzee off the pitch as he was subbed during the first half.
An awful start from the Red Devils saw them behind within minutes of kick-off, an unmarked Alexander Isak heading home from close range. Isak was exceptional all night and had another strike ruled out for offside, but Newcastle could easily have been four or five goals up by half time.
As it was, Joelinton’s header from a similar position to Isak’s goal was the only other strike of the night, but Ruben Amorim could be left in no doubt that his side remain absolutely miles off the level they need to be as they end 2024 in 14th place, while Newcastle rise to fifth. Dismal Man United out-thought and outplayed again - Amorim is culpable
22:16 , Karl Matchett
Ruben Amorim was crouching, shaking his head in disbelief. Even a brief time in charge of Manchester United has acquainted him with disappointment but nothing he had witnessed to date had seemed this disastrous. As Newcastle United powered to a victory where their regret should be that it wasn’t a thrashing, Amorim’s ideas were unravelling before his eyes.
Having warned his job could be in danger if United carried on losing, his team produced a first 35 minutes so abject that it suggested perilous times may await. In that context, an eventual 2-0 defeat was relatively respectable. This promised to be five or six, the sort of scoreline that would echo through the ages.
It was still a fifth league defeat in a month, something United had not suffered since 1962. It was another historic low for a club who seem to specialise in plummeting to new depths. No manager has made such a bad start at the club for nine decades. No United team had lost three consecutive home league games for 45 years. This one were beaten inside 20 minutes.

Alexander Isak speaking to Sky Sports after the match:
“It feels great. We haven’t won in a long time here, it was a great performance and the perfect way to end the year,” he said. “Our intensity was really good, we pressed high, made regains and counter-attacks. The challenge was to have the same intensity here as we do at home - the first half paid off.
“We’ve been much better lately, the challenge is to play the same way home and away. We’ve done that the last weeks and been consistent.”

Richard Jolly at full time:
“Newcastle's players applaud their fans, who chorus the name of Bruno Guimaraes. Manchester United's do a lap of dishonour, thanking the minority of supporters who are still here. They form two very different pictures but sum up the night of the two clubs.”
FT - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

A quiet enough second half with Newcastle opting for control for the most part, and Man United utterly unable to raise their level to anything beyond a few crosses.
Newcastle claim a fourth straight victory and a fourth straight clean sheet, lifting them above Bournemouth and Man City back up to fifth - three points off Chelsea.
As for Man United, another shocking first-half showing leaves them 14th in the table, three straight defeats to their name and a trip to Anfield and league-leaders Liverpool next. Their fans - the ones who are left - boo the full-time whistle once more and 2024 comes to a dreadful end for them.
90’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

Into stoppage time we go - to keep you up to date, Ipswich have beaten Chelsea. That means Manchester United are now down to only seven points above the relegation zone. Newcastle are going fifth, back above Man City.
Three minutes added on and lots of Man United fans have already left.
86’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

Antony on for De Ligt. Mazraoui goes to right-sided centre-back - a third combination for the defence tonight. A more attack-minded wing-back, however, which has probably been required.
United have a few minutes left to mount an improbable late comeback.
Harvey Barnes comes on for Newcastle, as does Joe Willock, with Gordon and Murphy replaced.

Newcastle fans entertain themselves telling Ruben Amorim “you’re getting sacked in the morning”. Might be a bit early for that but things do have to pick up.
Fabian Schar is being booked for hauling down Hojlund and that’s a costly one - a suspension against Spurs. Needed to get through this game without a yellow to get past the 19-match barrier.
After tonight it’s ten yellows in 32 games for a two-match ban.
78’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
21:38 , Karl Matchett
Nothing much of anything at all in the last ten minutes from Manchester United. As it stands they are heading not just for a third defeat in a row in the Premier League, but for a third in a row while failing to score too.
It’ll be five defeats in six - the outlier being that late turnaround against Man City, of all things.
74’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
21:35 , Karl Matchett
That’s the closest United have come to scoring tonight. An Eriksen corner is met by Yoro and he rises well to nod towards Dubravka’s far post...but just a foot or two wide.
Richard Jolly:
“As tends to be the case, the cameras have panned to the Manchester United brains trust and picked out Jason Wilcox, the technical manager. It hasn't been a great few weeks for the managers he has played a part in appointing. The other was Russell Martin. At least the second half has indicated Amorim can reorganise a side after the shambles at the start.”
70’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
21:30 , Karl Matchett
Newcastle seem to have a bit more control of the game again now. Man United’s spell was about 15 minutes, maybe 20, or improvement but not dominance, and certainly not creating anything of note themselves.
Now Hall fires one over, Isak makes ground down the right again, Joelinton probes centrally and Man United are back to chasing shadows. Isak has been different class tonight. 20 minutes remaining.
66’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
21:25 , Karl Matchett
Leny Yoro and Alejandro Garnacho are on for Martinez and Casemiro. Not a great two-thirds of a night for a stand-in skipper, at least partly at fault for both goals.
Hall swings a free-kick over from the right flank, left-footed, but United clear.
62’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
21:21 , Karl Matchett
Isak hauled down by Martinez after showing good power to get away from two players - the United captain for the night is booked.
Under half an hour now for them to mount a response and comeback and no real sign of it yet, even if Newcastle aren’t as full-on and scything through them as they were.
58’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
21:17 , Karl Matchett
Newcastle sub - Kieran Trippier appears to have hurt his hamstring and he’s going off. Tino Livramento comes on.
Richard Jolly: “Manchester United have at least had more stability since Kobbie Mainoo came on, even if that rather suggests he should have started. They have had a couple of good chances, too, and Casemiro perhaps ought to have scored on the stroke of half-time. It remains to be seen if they gamble on trying to get a point and risk a rout, or settle for a 2-0 loss.”
54’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
21:14 , Karl Matchett
Joelinton wins a free-kick and Newcastle squander the chance to trouble Onana - haven’t really had the fluency in their play over the last 15 minutes either side of the interval.
Hojlund escapes his man in the box and tees up an Amad shot but Tonali makes the block.
More reason for optimism for the home fans since the restart but no big chances for them and nothing for Dubravka to worry about.
Antony, Rashford and Garnacho are all on the bench for United.
50’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
21:10 , Karl Matchett
The home team have played far more aggressively and on the front foot since the restart. A good cross from Mazraoui on the right sees Schar forced into an awkward clearance behind for a corner under pressure. Eriksen’s corner goes through everyone - could have been a tap-in if a red shirt was in place. Newcastle need to heed the warnings here.
46' - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

Back underway and no further changes but both managers probably had plenty to say. Eddie Howe may have had a few words on concentration and not letting things drift, after that final five minutes of the first half.
Man Utd fans boo Zirkzee as striker subbed off early against Newcastle
20:59 , Karl Matchett
Manchester United fans booed and jeered their own player on Monday night, as Joshua Zirkzee bore the brunt of supporters’ displeasure during a dismal first half against Newcastle United.
The Red Devils had been thoroughly outplayed and were 2-0 down on home soil to the Magpies, with another strike ruled out for offside and Newcastle also striking the woodwork in a woefully one-sided first half.
That prompted Ruben Amorim to turn to his subs bench after just 32 minutes, with Zirkzee replaced by Kobbie Mainoo in an attempt to beef up the centre of the pitch, where the hosts had been second best by a long distance.
Zirkzee immediately faced extremely loud cheers at the decision to remove him, followed by an equally loud round of boos as he left the pitch. The Dutch attacker didn’t take his place to sit on the bench, but immediately appeared to don a coat and depart towards the tunnel - only to reappear a few minutes later.
During his half-hour or so on the pitch, Zirkzee managed just 14 touches of the ball, completed three passes and won one free-kick, but had no impact in terms of creating or taking shots.
Man United fans boo Zirkzee off as striker subbed before half time v Newcastle
HT - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
20:49 , Karl Matchett
One late chance for United - Mainoo frees Casemiro in the box but his first-time shot is curled well wide. He had time there, not a great effort. Let-off for Newcastle after Schar gave the ball away - but the whistle goes and it’s 2-0 to the visitors at the interval.
Half time, Newcastle well in control. Another loud chorus of boos from the home fans as the whistle goes.
Richard Jolly’s latest: “A dreadful first half for Manchester United. The mixture of cheers and boos when Joshua Zirkzee was hauled off after half an hour are a sign of what the crowd think of him. It is hard to see how he can come back from that, or how United can come back in this game.”
45’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
20:46 , Karl Matchett
Two shots and two touches in the box for Man United in this first half. They simply haven’t been at it in the slightest.
Three minutes added on.
40’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
20:43 , Karl Matchett
Well the good news for Manchester United is that with five minutes to go until half time, they are 2-0 down.
And yes, that’s good news - it should be three at a minimum, it could easily be five, and they’ll soon have 15 minutes to sort things out a bit.
Ruben Amorim has a massive job on his hands to get them back in the game - Eddie Howe must want more of the same. They are swarming United at will, until about five minutes ago.
36’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
20:37 , Karl Matchett
Richard Jolly’s scathing and accurate assessment of the hosts:
“Utter dominance from Newcastle, utterly awful from Manchester United. Ruben Amorim's team are being overrun in midfield - no surprise when it is Casemiro and Christian Eriksen against Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton - and their five defenders are struggling to defend. Neither goal reflected well on Lisandro Martinez, who isn't exactly looking an inspired choice to captain the team in Bruno Fernandes' absence. Newcastle could score six or seven here.”
34’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
20:35 , Karl Matchett
Joshua Zirkzee has just been given whatever the absolute rock bottom opposite is to a standing ovation - the most vicious, vociferous booing and jeering by his own supporters as he’s subbed off for Kobbie Mainoo.
This Man United team is “the absolute worst pound for pound football team in the country, bar none,” says Gary Neville.
Moments later Hojlund is played in for a first sight of goal at last and can only clip his shot past the far post.
30’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
20:33 , Karl Matchett
The ball’s in the net again - but the offside flag is up this time. We’ve seen this kind of thing before given: basically a Schar shot is deflected into his path by a United defender, so Isak - way offside in normal terms - plays on and absolutely blams it top corner. But the flag is up and the ref sides with his assistant.
One minute later and Newcastle are so close to a brilliant third, passing straight through United’s back three with some amazing one-touch football - Tonali gets past Onana but thunders a shot onto the post from close-range. Amorim isn’t waiting around, he’s making a sub soon.
United have been utterly woeful.
26’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
20:28 , Karl Matchett
The chances just keep coming and coming for the away team. Hall goes for goal forcing an Onana save, then Tonali’s strike is diverted wide by an outstretched defensive toe.
From the resulting corner Trippier sees Onana punch the ball behind at the near post - he’s conceded from two directly recently - then the next one goes far post and the goalkeeper clatters into his post. The ball goes behind though and United escape this time.
23’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
20:26 , Karl Matchett
Unsurprisingly the home support are sounding increasingly irate as a truly dismal first half of the campaign looks to be heading toward an even worse end. Newcastle absolutely deserve a two-goal lead right now.
Zirkzee gives the ball away in the final third and more groans sound out - they’re yet to have a shot and the front three of Zirkzee, Hojlund and Diallo have had seven, six and six touches respectively.
GOAL! 19’ - Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
20:21 , Karl Matchett
Old Trafford silenced, Newcastle’s lead doubled! It’s played through midfield again, wide to Gordon, he checks inside and crosses and once more it’s a black and white shirt which wins the header, Joelinton this time powering in, beating Martinez once more and leaving Onana rooted to the spot.
A quick check for a handball is passed and it’s 2-0 to Newcastle!
18' - Man Utd 0-1 Newcastle
20:19 , Karl Matchett
One end to the other. Eriksen tries to dribble into the box, doesn’t quite manage it and Guimaraes powers a 60-yard pass over to Isak, who has a simple run towards the penalty box himself - but then dinks a weird effort straight into Onana’s arms. Not quite the execution he was hoping for you suspect.
Casemiro and Eriksen are being run ragged so far by Newcastle’s trio.
14’ - Man Utd 0-1 Newcastle
20:15 , Karl Matchett
Richard Jolly:
“Newcastle don't often come to Old Trafford as favourites but they have today. They have begun in that way, too, their early lead a reward for a positive start. If it is a meeting of a team who are out of form against one who is in it, very few are in better shape now than Alexander Isak, whose header was his ninth goal in his last six league games. Newcastle are finding space at will. They looked sharper, brighter and better. It could be a long night for Manchester United.”
12’ - Man Utd 0-1 Newcastle
20:14 , Karl Matchett
Isak cuts in off the left, beats two and shoots against Maguire - Man United can’t get close to Newcastle right now. They are by far the quicker, fitter and more organised side. Early on in the game but so far it’s more evidence of the lack of cohesion in this Red Devils side.
8’ - Man Utd 0-1 Newcastle
20:11 , Karl Matchett
United trying to sort themselves out a bit here. In the aftermath of the goal there were quick recriminations, Casemiro running back to berate Harry Maguire and Onana getting involved too. Looked like it was in fact Martinez who lost Isak, though.
Gordon now beats Mazraoui and the ball reaches Joelinton - he fires over the bar left-footed.
4’ - Man Utd 0-1 Newcastle
20:06 , Karl Matchett
A quick VAR check for offside against Hall - he’s fine, onside, the goal stands. Man United behind already!
GOAL! 3’ - Man Utd 0-1 Newcastle

Well that didn’t take long! A move from the middle out to the left, Lewis Hall picksitup wide and his bending cross is perfect - right over Maguire, onto the unmarked forehead of Isak, six yards out, and he heads down and into the back of the net. So easy for Newcastle.

Newcastle know there’s a Champions League spot very much there to fight for; United might be resetting, but they still need to climb from the embarrassing position they’re in right now.

Let’s look at Newcastle for a moment then. They are seventh heading into the match but can rise to fifth ahead of Bournemouth and Man City tonight if they take the three points - away from home this season they’ve won three, drawn three and lost three. Man United’s home form is won four, drawn one, lost four, so certainly looks open from that respect which way tonight might go.
The Magpies have won their last three in the Premier League, one of only three teams in the top flight to have a run of nine points from nine right now. Forest and Liverpool are the others.

Richard Jolly is our man at Old Trafford tonight - here’s his thoughts ahead of the match:
“Marcus Rashford returns to the Manchester United squad, albeit on the bench. In an intriguing selection, Ruben Amorim returns to the youthful double act of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in midfield, even if it is partly because Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte are suspended. Joshua Zirkzee is one of the No 10s, which scarcely feels ideal.”
Man Utd v Newcastle - live
19:25 , Karl Matchett
Neville continues on Amorim’s 3-4-3 setup and on the prospect of altering that somewhat if he continues to suffer defeats:
“If you remember Louis van Gaal, it felt he signed several players to play wing-back but it changed very quickly. If the results continue as they are for Amorim, he might have to change something. Man United can’t go any lower than they are.”
A bit of a laugh in-studio then as it’s pointed out Man Unitedcan in fact go somewhat lower...! Not that Neville and co want to even consider that prospect!

On Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher has been discussing the lack of final-third ability from Man United’s wing-backs and now Gary Neville suggests Newcastle wouldn’t take too many players from their opponents.
How far have they fallen?
“There’s no doubt he’s sick of conceding goals at set pieces. When you look at Newcastle and Manchester United, how many players would Newcastle take? There wouldn’t be many.
“An in-form Onana over Dubravka, Amad over Murphy and maybe the form Maguire has been in, but then I’m struggling. Not sure Eddie Howe would be taking too many from the red shirts.”

Eddie Howe praises Martin Dubravka on Old Trafford return
19:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Keeper Martin Dubravka will renew acquaintances with Manchester United this evening having come in from the cold to play his part in Newcastle’s December revival.
The 35-year-old Slovakia international has conceded just one goal in four games and none in three Premier League outings since taking over from the injured Nick Pope earlier this month, and he will head for Old Trafford, where he had a loan spell during the 2022-23 campaign, looking for a fifth successive win.
Dubravka’s form, and in particular his distribution, has helped provide a solid foundation for the Magpies, and head coach Eddie Howe has been hugely impressed with the way a man who had made just one appearance for the club since May has slotted into the team.
Howe said: “I’m very pleased with Martin. It’s never easy to come in for a goalkeeper in any situation when you haven’t played for a while because it’s about rhythm and it’s about confidence, but Martin has picked it up from minute one.
“He’s distributed the ball really, really well - that’s been a huge thing in his game that’s always been there.
“Against Aston Villa (on Boxing Day), I think back to a number of aerial claims, catches that he’s taken under pressure - he’s dealt with that aspect really well too, so I’m really pleased with Martin.”

Amad Diallo keen to ‘make history’ with Manchester United

Amad Diallo “wants to make history” with Manchester United as he aims to help Ruben Amorim turn around the club’s fortunes.
These remain troubled times for United, who have taken only seven points from Amorim’s first seven Premier League games in charge going into tonight.
But Diallo has offered some cause for optimism with his recent form, highlighted by his dramatic late winner in the Manchester derby as United scored two late goals to win 2-1 at City earlier this month.

Ruben Amorim said he cannot be comfortable in his position as Manchester United head coach but likes the danger as his side’s slump continues.
United suffered their third consecutive defeat when they lost 2-0 at Wolves on Boxing Day to leave Amorim with five losses in his last seven games.
And he believes that his transfer fee – United paid Sporting CP €11m (£9.1m) to meet his buyout clause and bring him to Old Trafford early – will not protect him from the sack.
