Follow live coverage as Manchester United face Southampton today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.

The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola's side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. Chelsea remain big-spending, Manchester United's latest rebuild continues and both Tottenham and Newcastle will expect improvements this year - yet it was Aston Villa who snared fourth last term.

Meanwhile, it's Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:

De Ligt makes a hash of Mateus Fernandes' delivery into the area, it falls kindly for Sulemana, who can't react quick enough and the Dutch defender recovers to block the shot for a corner.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:42

Part of the issue the home side are facing here is how deep Diallo and Mazraoui are in the wing-back areas. So far, United have played pretty much with a back five and it means often they're just having to go long to find Hojlund in the channels to varying degrees of success.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:40

Martinez overcooks a cross from the left that Diallo recovers. He centres from the right but referee Brooks seemingly unintentionally gets in the way of a waiting Ugarte.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:39

Bruno Fernandes has a pop for United from 25 yards but it's struck low and straight at Ramsdale. You'd expect a player of his quality to have tested the Saints stopper more than he did there.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:37

CLOSE! Sulemana has tormented Yoro all game and the winger gets past his man far too easily again. He then skips inside De Ligt and aims towards the top-right corner but he gets just a bit too much purchase on the effort and it goes wide.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:34

Juric has been very animated in the Southampton technical area. He often looks disgruntled but you have to assume that beneath the touchline theatrics he's pretty content with how his side are playing so far.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:34

It remains goalless at Old Trafford after half an hour but both teams have had chances to open the scoring. Mateus Fernandes has been a real threat for the visitors, who you could definitely argue have looked the more comfortable of the two teams.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:30

GREAT DOUBLE SAVE FROM ONANA! Dibling jinks his way into the area past Martinez only to be thwarted by the United goalkeeper, Mateus Fernandes brilliantly takes it down and from eight yards Onana recovers to make another fantastic stop. Great work from the home goalkeeper.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:29

Diallo this time delivers the corner from the right and Ramsdale, under pressure, gets a strong fist to quell the danger.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:28

United are appealing for a penalty here. Garnacho shows good commitment to get two shots away, the second of which looped into the air and struck Walker-Peters on the arm. It goes behind for a corner and VAR, rightly, says no penalty.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:27

More good work from United as Bruno Fernandes finds Diallo on the left of the box. He centres for Garnacho, who is caught on his toes and Harwood-Bellis is able to clear. It's another chance for United that.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:26

United are just starting to exert a bit of pressure now and Diallo almost squeeze s a low centre into the path of Hojlund but Southampton survive the danger.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:23

HOW HAS HE MISSED?! It's a wonderful break from United as Bruno Fernandes plays Hojlund down the left flank. The Norwegian strikers gets in behind, pulls the ball back for Garnacho and he side-foots it horribly wide. That was a golden chance for the Red Devils but it remains 0-0.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:21

United win a free-kick out on the left flank, which Bruno Fernandes takes short to Garnacho. Mateus Fernandes blocks the shot with his head and briefly goes to ground before getting back to his feet.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:20

At the other end, Diallo and Garnacho work an opening for Bruno Fernandes, whose edge-of-the-box shot is deflected for a corner. Diallo swings in the corner, but Dibling heads it clear.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:19

It's another effort on target for Southampton. Fernandes glides past Ugarte and shows good footwork but he can't quite make good enough connection on the shot and it's a simple stop for Onana.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:17

United have yet to really bare their teeth in this one. There have been some neat passages of play but nothing to really cut through the visitors. In fact, the away team are looking reasonably comfortable in truth.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:16

Sulemana does brilliantly to get past Yoro, who is beaten far too easily, and Onana makes a fantastic save to deny the Saints winger, who fired low across the face of goal. It's the first big opportunity of the game and it's gone the way of the visitors.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:13

Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 15 Premier League games against Southampton (W7 D8) since a 1-0 home loss in January 2016.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:13

Martinez concedes a free-kick on Fernandes but United easily deal with the danger.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:08

Southampton are trying to play with high energy but thus far United are able to keep hold of the ball pretty comfortably. Bree gets a talking to from Brooks for a clumsy foul on Garnacho.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:06

Garnacho gets down the left flank and manages to win the corner off Bree. Fernandes swings it in from the left and Ramsdale does well to strongly punch it away.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:04

Aside from a comedy misplaced pass from Diallo there's been little to report in the opening exchanges, with both teams still just feeling one another out.

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:02

Referee John Brooks blows his whistle and we are underway at Old Trafford!

Manchester United vs Southampton

20:01

The players are out on the pitch here at Old Trafford and we are now just moments away from kick-off!

Amorim makes two changes to his XI, with Yoro and Garnacho come in United's XI, with Maguire and the suspended Dalot dropping out. There's also still no place in the squad for Marcus Rashford, who is heavily tipped to leave Old Trafford this month. Saints note two changes from their last Premier League outing - a 5-1 thumping at the hands of Brentford - as Sugawara and Fernandes replace Nathan Wood and Paul Onuachu, both of whom drop to the bench.

The Saints did pick up a first win of the Ivan Juric era at the weekend as Championship side Swansea City were put to the sword 3-0 at St Mary's Stadium. In the top-flight, though, they have just six points from 20 matches and are a whopping 10 points shy of safety in the Premier League. Stranger things have happened but it will take a big effort for them to come away with a victory in this one.

Manchester United vs Southampton

19:30

It's fair to say the Red Devils haven't exactly had the "new manager bounce" since Ruben Amorim assumed the reigns at Old Trafford with United winning just four of 13 matches across all competitions in 90 minutes. They did, however, pick a up morale-boosting shoot-out victory over Arsenal in the FA Cup third round on Sunday - to follow a hard-fought draw with rivals Liverpool - and they welcome a Saints side who are in a truly sorry state in the Premier League.
