Manchester United will be looking to avoid a fifth consecutive Premier League game without a win when they take on bottom-of-the-league Southampton later today.

A penalty shootout victory after a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes saw United beat Arsenal in the FA Cup third round on the weekend, setting up a clash with Leicester City in the next round of the competition. It puts Ruben Amorim's side in high spirits ahead of the Premier League clash against Southampton later today, where nothing less than three points is expected.

If United fail to win at Old Trafford, It will extend their winless run in the Premier League to five games, with Amorim's side only winning two of their last nine league games. The meeting between the two sides earlier in the season saw United win 3-0 on the south coast, with Matthijs de Ligt, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho all getting on the scoresheet.

Man United vs Southampton score predicted

To complete this simulation, we used EA FC 25 and updated the squads with the latest injuries and suspensions.

We predict that United could set up in a 3-4-2-1 formation, with their line-up as follows: Onana; De Ligt, Maguire, Martinez; Mazraoui, Ugarte, Mainoo, Malacia; Amad, Fernandes; Hojlund.

We predict that the Saints could line up in a 3-4-2-1 formation, with their starting XI as follows: Ramsdale; Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, Wood; Walker-Peters, Ugochukwu, Fernandes, Manning; Dibling, Sulemana; Onuachu.

United began the game with great intensity as they searched for an early breakthrough, but a mix of good defending and poor finishing saw them unable to take the lead in the first half, despite them managing 15 shots to Southampton's one. The best chance of the half fell to Amad Diallo when Noussair Mazraoui's long ball down the right channel rolled into the path of the winger, but after cutting onto his left foot, he could only fire his effort into the feet of Aaron Ramsdale.

A goal was needed soon, and Amorim's side almost paid the price for their wasted chances when Taylor Hardwood-Bellis hit the post from a corner. United continued to press for a goal, and in the 74th minute, it finally arrived.

United capitalised on a rare Southampton attack when Manuel Ugarte won back possession in midfield to start a counterattack for his side. His long pass forward picked out Rasmus Hojlund who cut the ball back for Fernandes, and with a first-time shot, he found the bottom corner to make it 1-0.

Now behind, Southampton started to push further forward in search of a goal, but this only worked in United's favour. Joshua Zirkzee was brought down inside the box following another United counterattack to win Amorim's side a penalty, and the Dutchman stepped up to take, calmly sending the ball down the middle of the goal to secure a 2-0 win.
