Both Manchester United Women and Manchester City Women experienced derby day success this week, each earning the bragging rights in a derby day double-header.

After United won Sunday's Women's Super League [WSL] meeting at the Etihad Stadium 4-2, City inflicted revenge on Marc Skinner's team as soon as Wednesday night, winning 2-1 at Leigh Sports Village in the League Cup quarter-finals.

City's reward for getting the better of their neighbours is a semi-final showdown away from home against Arsenal next month. The Gunners are the current holders and have won the competition in each of the last two seasons.

As part of the Manchester Evening News' new weekly women's football notebook, here is a round-up of the five biggest stories from the women's football scene across Manchester from the past week.

Toone inspires derby day triumph

United went into last Sunday's derby at the Etihad two places and one point behind City in the WSL table and having lost their last three meetings with their cross-city rivals. But a hat-trick from Ella Toone saw the Reds roar their way to a 4-2 win.

The England international took full advantage of some sloppy City defending, likewise Leah Galton, who netted United's second. Toone delicately lifted the ball over City goalkeeper Khiara Keating for her opener before applying a finish from close range for her second, after Celin Bizet intercepted a pass from Keating inside her own penalty area that was intended for Leila Ouahabi.

Despite finding themselves 3-0 down with just 36 minutes played, City pulled two goals back before half-time, scoring via headers from Vivianne Miedema and January signing Rebecca Knaak. However, City's hopes of completing an impressive comeback were dented when Toone completed her hat-trick just 10 seconds into the second half.

City restarted the game, knocked the ball back to goalkeeper Keating and her attempted clearance was charged down, the ball bounced forward and Toone stroked it into an empty net to complete a memorable evening's work.

Toone told MUTV: "To score against City as a United fan means a lot. I haven't scored against City before, so it was nice to get a hat-trick - I'm buzzing and want to continue performing like this with that positivity and that freedom. Hopefully I can keep helping the team."

City get revenge

Three days on from the defeat at the Etihad, City inflected revenge on United on Wednesday night, winning 2-1 at Leigh to progress to the last four of the League Cup. Gareth Taylor's side got the job done via goals from Laura Coombs and Lily Murphy either side of a Mille Turner effort for the hosts.

For the opener, Murphy worked the ball to the byline and sent in a low cross that Coombs converted at the near post. United responded when Turner stabbed home a brilliant effort after a high ball into the penalty area wasn't dealt with.

City reclaimed the lead in first half stoppage time when Murphy cut inside and bent a right-footed shot past United shot-stopper Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

Scoring one and creating another, Murphy was the star of the show, earning praise from boss Taylor, who said: "That goal was special for her, at 18 and contributing like that in a derby speaks volumes."

City land Brazilian

City secured the signing of Brazilian forward Kerolin Nicoli hours ahead of the victory over United on Wednesday. She has joined the club from North Carolina Courage on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

The 25-year-old enjoyed three very successful years in the US, helping North Carolina Courage win two NWSL Challenge Cups. She has also earned 45 caps for Brazil and helped them win a silver medal at last summer's Olympics in Paris.

On her decision to join City, she said: "I'm so excited to be here. There were a lot of reasons why I chose City and one of those was to play in the Champions League.

"I think the players [in the Women's Super League] are really technical and the team is compact. I want to be better, to learn different things and to come here to be challenged."

She could make her debut this weekend after being named on the bench against United on Wednesday night.

Kelly to cross the divide?

It was reported by The Telegraph on Sunday that United want to sign Chloe Kelly on loan from City. The England international started the recent 3-0 FA Cup win over Ipswich Town but missed last Sunday's Manchester derby due to ankle problem, according to City chief Taylor.

He said: "Chloe trained last night (Saturday) and came out of the session just after a warm-up with an ankle problem so wasn't available to be selected for tonight.

When asked about United's interest in Kelly, Taylor added: "All of that stuff is news to me, so no comment."

The WSL transfer window remains open until 11pm on Thursday, January 30.

A big weekend ahead

With WSL table-toppers Chelsea taking on second-placed Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday lunchtime, both United and City will be looking to take advantage of at least one of them dropping points. Chelsea are currently clear at the top on 31 points, seven ahead of third-placed United and nine clear of City in fourth.

City are the first of the quartet to play this weekend, taking on Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday lunchtime. A first league win since December 8 will see them move above both United and Arsenal ahead of Sunday's games and onto 25 points.

United will complete this weekend's WSL schedule, taking on Brighton & Hove Albion at Leigh on Sunday evening, kick-off 6.45pm. Skinner's men will be eyeing a fourth successive league win.
