Following the level of positivity generated by Sunday's draw at Anfield, Manchester United will be hoping to add to that by flexing their muscles in the transfer market.

The January window opened for business last week and United supporters are hopeful head coach Ruben Amorim will be able to add to his squad this month. However, the word from the club is that there is "no money" to spend on prospective additions.

United do not have a budget to work with this month, meaning incomings rest on departures. A cluster of players are already being heavily linked with the prospect of leaving Old Trafford.

Amorim, speaking at his pre-Liverpool press conference last Friday, said United will "try to do something" this month. It is felt the Reds would benefit from drafting in a left-sided wing-back and a centre-forward.

However, the January market is notoriously difficult to navigate; prices become inflated and clubs can often dig their heels in when it comes to trying to retain their best assets. Furthermore, it is often very late in the window when loan deals get finalised.

United, regardless of their current financial situation, are, as ever, being linked with a catalogue of players.

Amid their current situation, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that any additions will be temporary signings. Paris Saint-Germain duo Nuno Mendes and Randal Kolo Muani have been named as possibilities.

To sign the aforementioned duo, however, United will have to cut their cloth first, and Marcus Rashford, Joshua Zirkzee and Antony are among those who are being most heavily linked with exits. Shifting them will free up funds.

If those three are to depart and United draft in Mendes, who worked with Amorim at Sporting Lisbon, and striker Kolo Muani, Amorim's strongest matchday squad, made up of 20 players, will become easier to plot, provided everyone remains injury-free.

Starting with the starting XI, Andre Onana, despite Amorim's desire to recruit a new goalkeeper this year, is expected to still be United's No.1 on the other side of the January window. Ahead of him, Amorim has four contenders vying for three centre-back spots, meaning one player will be left disappointed.

Amorim spoke about the need for leaders to step forward ahead of the trip to Liverpool and Harry Maguire is one of United's most experienced figures. However, the club, at the same time, also needs to plan for the future, and Leny Yoro is part of that plan, meaning he could nudge ahead of Maguire and operate next to Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez.

The wing-backs are key to Amorim's system, and the prospect of signing Mendes this month should see him become the starting left wing-back. He has experience of playing as a wing-back under Amorim at Sporting, making him an ideal fit.

Diogo Dalot, despite playing on the left a lot this season, is a right-sided player and will be competing with Noussair Mazraoui, if Mendes is to sign. Amad has also played as a right wing-back under Amorim, but his recent run in attack suggests he could be there to stay.

Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte produced their best performance as a partnership at Anfield and should grow as a paring the more they play together. They compliment each other's qualities and should be able to form a long-term midfield partnership.

As far as the attack is concerned, Bruno Fernandes is a guaranteed starter as the left-sided No.10, while Amad is likely to continue on the right, amid Amorim's preference for a left-footed player in that role. If Amad is to revert to a wing-back role in the long-term, United will have to sign a new No.10 in the summer when Amorim's rebuild is expected to take shape.

Rasmus Hojlund and Kolo Muani, should the latter sign, will be jockeying for the role as the starting striker, with the loser taking up residency on the bench.

As far as the substitutes bench is concerned, Altay Bayindir will continue as the second-choice goalkeeper. Maguire will be able to provide centre-back cover, likewise Luke Shaw should United be able to get him fit again. The loser in the squabble between Mazraoui and Dalot will provide wing-back cover.

With Ugarte and Mainoo destined to become Amorim's first-choice midfield duo, Christian Eriksen and Casemiro will have to make do with places on the bench, likewise Mason Mount once he is back fit. Alejandro Garnacho and Hojlund could complete the bench.

United's strongest post-window matchday squad:

Starting XI: Onana; Yoro, De Ligt, Martinez; Mazraoui, Ugarte, Mainoo, Mendes; Amad, Kolo Muani, Fernandes.

Substitutes: Bayindir, Maguire, Shaw, Dalot, Casemiro, Eriksen, Mount, Garnacho, Hojlund.
