Marcus Rashford was once again absent from the Manchester United squad that traveled to Liverpool on Sunday.

The forward’s future at United looks uncertain after he conducted an interview last month in which he revealed that he is ‘ready for a new challenge’. Rashford has not played in the club’s last five matches but was on the bench for last week’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle United.

That prompted suggestions the 27-year-old could be back in Ruben Amorim’s plans and therefore in the squad to face Liverpool on Sunday in the Premier League, however the United boss explained ahead of the game that Rashford would not be part of the group that traveled due to illness.

“It's the same situation, at the moment he is ill. He is not training,” the Portuguese manager revealed in his pre-match press conference on Friday. “We will see in the future but this is like a normal player, then I make a selection. So, it's the same. I think he is going to be out, this week he is out.”

Rashford, a boyhood United fan, has been linked with a real variety of moves in recent days, including to Saudi Arabia, AC Milan, Napoli and Seattle Sounders. The attacker has made 426 appearances for United, scoring 138 goals in the process.

Despite the absence of Rashford against Liverpool, Amorim still has plenty of options to choose from in the attacking areas, with Amad, Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund starting, while Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee are on the bench.

The Red Devils head into the match on the back of four straight defeats, including three without a goal in the Premier League.

As for Liverpool, Arne Slot welcomes Ibrahima Konate back into the side, although Dominik Szobaszlai is missing through illness. He’s one of just two absences, with Joe Gomez also ruled out following the hamstring injury he sustained last week in the 5-0 at the London Stadium.

Arsenal’s dropped points on Saturday means Liverpool has the chance to extend its gap at the top of the table to eight points with a game in hand.
