Marcus Rashford has been handed a surprise lifeline to save and extend his Manchester United career.

As reported, the wantaway England forward has been recalled to the matchday squad for an impending Premier League meeting with Newcastle United at Old Trafford. Rashford has not featured for the club since December 7.

The 27-year-old was omitted from the Manchester derby win that followed on December 15, while speculation on his future has been at fever pitch since he decided to conduct a bombshell interview with journalist Henry Winter, in which Rashford admitted that he's ready for a new challenge.

With an eye on the January transfer window - and a predicted departure - Rashford is set for a role vs Newcastle. Here, we take a closer look at the latest news and headlines on him.

United make surprise Rashford decision vs Newcastle

Head coach Ruben Amorim knew that he needed to make at least two changes to his starting team on Monday night. United are without both Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes through suspension, and the absence of the latter has effectively opened a surprise door for Rashford just before the market reopens.

He's set to be included in their 20-man group vs Newcastle for the first time since December 7.

What has Rashford said about his United future

Apart from that bombshell interview with Winter, Rashford has been fairly coy about his future at United, having signed a new long-term contract with the club in 2023.

But when speaking with Winter, though, the England international said: "For me, personally, I think I'm ready for a new challenge and the next steps.

"When I leave it's going to be; 'No hard feelings'. You're not going to have any negative comments from me about Manchester United. That's me as a person.

"If I know that a situation is already bad then I'm not going to make it worse. I've seen how other players have left in the past and I don't want to be that person. When I leave, I'll make a statement and it will be from me."

What has Amorim said about his plan for Rashford

Even though Rashford has been absent in recent matchday squads, he remains a huge talking point. Amorim has - on more than one occasion - been asked to share his stance on the Academy graduate during press conferences.

Speaking most recently, the Portuguese said: "Yeah, it's my decision. He wants to play, he's trying.

"It's my decision. Only my decision. I spoke with a lot of players individually - during training - so I try to do things and I am doing things my way and that is the only way I know.

"If I don't do that, I will lose myself, and I will not lose myself, I know what I am doing.

"When I feel that is the right moment, I will change something. Until then, I will continue to think what is best for the team. I speak with him every day, not about the interview, about the performance."

Who could sign Rashford in January?

French champions PSG have, even tentatively, been linked with a move for Rashford over recent years whenever his future at United has been subject to speculation. However, The Daily Mail suggest any talk of Rashford moving to the Parc des Princes in the New Year are wide of the mark.

Other current whispers around him involve Arsenal, Barcelona and the lucrative Saudi Arabian market.
