The January transfer window has closed for yet another year - and clubs are locking in their squads to tackle the remainder of the season - barring any free agent transfers. Aston Villa grabbed the headlines several times in the past month - making big moves that few saw coming in December.

Villa have done an impressive amount of business in a window which is traditionally difficult to navigate. The key departure, and the spark for what came afterwards, was the blockbuster sale of young Colombian Jhon Duran to Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr.

That £65million windfall came after a breakthrough into the team by Duran, who was challenging Ollie Watkins for a starting position and giving manager Unai Emery a difficult choice every match. That choice has been taken away, while the club fiercely resisted a move by Arsenal to poach Watkins, as well.

Jaden Philogene has also left for Ipswich Town, after joining back up with Aston Villa just last summer. He failed to find much playing time under Emery, but the talented youngster should be able to find a home at Ipswich, and the club reportedly made a small profit.

Emiliano Buendia has been loaned out to Bayer Leverkusen in Germany after signing a contract extension, and will hope to rediscover his best form after recovering from his devastating injury suffered in 2023. Diego Carlos has left the club to join Fenerbahce, having been with the club since 2022.

The incoming transfers were the big talking points, as Manchester United's England international Marcus Rashford has signed on loan with a £40million option in the summer. There seems to be no way back for Rashford at United under their new head coach Ruben Amorim, so both clubs will be hoping Rashford rediscovers his best form in the latter part of this season.

Champions League nous has also been added in the form of Marco Asensio, while Donyell Malen has arrived from Borussia Dortmund, completing a new-look forward line for Aston Villa. New right-back Andres Garcia came from Levante, and the club secured the loan signing of Chelsea defender and France international Axel Disasi in the final moments of the transfer window.
