Mark Hughes has been appointed as Carlisle United’s new head coach.

The former Bradford City boss has been confirmed as Mike Williamson’s replacement at Brunton Park.

Hughes has accepted the challenge of trying to save the Cumbrians’ EFL status with 18 games remaining in the League Two season.

The 61-year-old, who was sacked by Bradford in October 2023, emerged ahead of other strong contenders such as the former Northampton Town boss Jon Brady.

United’s owners, the Piatak family, and fellow club directors have gambled on a high-profile appointment to save Carlisle’s campaign.

Hughes, who has signed a rolling contract, takes the helm with the Blues five points from safety, with his first game in charge set to be Saturday’s trip to Grimsby Town.

Former Manchester United star Hughes had suddenly emerged as the 1/4 favourite with bookmakers on Wednesday night before betting was suspended, the News & Star reporting this morning that Hughes had become the likely contender.

His appointment comes three days after Williamson’s near-five month reign ended with the sack on transfer deadline day.

Hughes’ managerial career saw him at the helm of the Wales national team before spells in charge of Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, Queens Park Rangers, Stoke City and Southampton before dropping to League Two with Bradford in 2022.

He led the Bantams to the play-offs in the 2022/23 season where his side were beaten by Carlisle in the semi-final.

His stint at Valley Parade then came to an end after a poor start to the 2023/24 season saw him axed with Bradford in 18th position.

Glyn Hodges, who has assisted Hughes at a number of his previous clubs, has also joined the Blues, also on a rolling contract.

United confirmed that they will work with existing coaches Ian Watson, Chris Bell and Tom Weal, who were brought in by Williamson from MK Dons.

Sporting director Rob Clarkson, speaking on the club website, said: “I’m delighted that Mark has agreed to join Carlisle United.

"His experience and stature in the game speaks for itself.

"He is someone who will instantly command respect from all staff and players and I am really excited to work with him.

"The players we have here will suit the way he wants to play and I’m sure our fans will really get behind him and the team in our remaining 18 games."
